Was she the greatest poet of all time? Been studying the greats for a few years now and I honestly can't think of anyone better than her at straight-up poetry.

Have you ever actually studied poetry in university? I have. I don't have a survey or anything, but most of the professor I ever talked to on it felt she was the greatest, or at least one of.

Maya Angelou really is the greatest poet of all time though, maybe tied with Langston Hughes. Adversity hones talent, it's the same reason black comedians are the funniest, black musicians make the most original music, and black athletes hold all the world records.

>Still I Rise Poem by Maya Angelou
>You may write me down in history
>With your bitter, twisted lies,
>You may tread me in the very dirt
>But still, like dust, I'll rise.
>
>Does my sassiness upset you?
>Why are you beset with gloom?
>'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
>Pumping in my living room.
>
>Just like moons and like suns,
>With the certainty of tides,
>Just like hopes springing high,
>Still I'll rise.
>
>Did you want to see me broken?
>Bowed head and lowered eyes?
>Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
>Weakened by my soulful cries.
>
>Does my haughtiness offend you?
>Don't you take it awful hard
>'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
>Diggin' in my own back yard.
>
>You may shoot me with your words,
>You may cut me with your eyes,
>You may kill me with your hatefulness,
>But still, like air, I'll rise.
>
>Does my sexiness upset you?
>Does it come as a surprise
>That I dance like I've got diamonds
>At the meeting of my thighs?
>
>Out of the huts of history's shame
>I rise
>Up from a past that's rooted in pain
>I rise
>I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
>Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
>Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
>I rise
>Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
>I rise
>Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
>I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
>I rise
>I rise
>I rise.

The worst part about poets like these is that you can't criticism them without someone pulling the race card or saying "oh, but she wuz so influential to the civil rights movement"

Is this a joke or a meme? I thought I was on one of 4chan's more enlightened boards. Women writers and poets are a fundamental part of chronicling the human condition. Doubly so if they are writers of color. To believe that a woman or a transgender person could not ascend those heights is so backwards and so deplorable that it makes my head spin. I mean it actually takes me aback. Please get out of your mom's basement, where you must currently reside because I don't think anyone in the real world would think like that, and join civilization.

Fuck, I mean honestly. Please don't post anything like this again. If you do, I'll report you to the mods, and they can give you a ban. I generally believe in restorative rather than punitive measures, but don't think I won't do it.

The other problem with posts like this is that Angelou is largely elevated because she's a black woman who writes middling, reader friendly poetry. Lets not pretend that more deserving black poets are ignored (like Reginal Shepherd) simply because they don't write some sloppy Billy Collins bullshit.

Greatest poet of all time is a daunting question. There are probably about 10 absolutely indispensable folks we could come up with off the cuff, much less zero in on just one. Shakespeare might be the most bang for the buck though.

No, Maya Angelou really was talented. But I agree there are many great black authors and poets who don't get nearly the respect they deserve, Langston Hughes for example, probably one of the greatest authors of all time, but gets completely ignored because he is black.

See I'd completely disagree on both counts. He's well celebrated. I read him in middle school, high school, and college. I don't know anyone who doesn't know who he was. He's also celebrated because he's a big representative of the strain of Black American poetry in the first half of the 20th century. All the white guys worth knowing from that same period wrote more demanding stuff and I'd guess that's why more people don't read Ezra Pound in high school (outside of something like In a Station of the Metro).

Claudia Rankine or Carolyn Kizer on the other hand...

This isn't a troll. This isn't "bait." This is a concerned citizen of the world and 4chan, who is deeply upset by the casual and blanket racism that I see becoming popular. It's practically Nazi Germany on here. I try to speak truth to power on here when I can. If that offends you, sorry I'm not sorry. And you know what? I'm not alone. I speak for so many people on here who are too afraid to speak up.

Watch a documentary on the man. He was idealistic and traveled to the Soviet Union with a group of black activists. USSR basically enslaved them and had them working literally picking cotton the rest of their lives. The only reason Hughes escaped was he had a little bit of fame. Then when he returned to the US, his work was all but forgotten. Try reading a history book some time instead of just fiction, moron.
