I've been enjoying Van Dyke Park's lyrical contributions to the Beach Boys recently, I'm wondering if I should explore his other music. I'm aware that he composed the orchestral arrangements for Newsom's Ys too.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
To a handsome man and baton
A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
Columinated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping?

Hung velvet overtaken me
Dim chandelier awaken me
To a song dissolved in the dawn
The music hall a costly bow
The music all is lost for now
To a muted trumpeter swan
Columinated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
Are you sleeping, Brother John?

Dove nested towers the hour was
Strike the street quicksilver moon
Carriage across the fog
Two-Step to lamp lights cellar tune
The laughs come hard in Auld Lang Syne

The glass was raised, the fired rose
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port adieu or die

A choke of grief heart hardened I
Beyond belief a broken man too tough to cry

Surf's up
Aboard a tidal wave
Come about hard and join
The young and often spring you gave
I heard the word
Wonderful thing
A children's song

Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
Child, child, child, child, child
A child is the father of the man
A children's song
Have you listened as they played
Their song is love
And the children know the way
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child
Child, child, child, child, child
Na na na na na na na na
Child, child, child, child, child
That's why the child is the father to the man
Child, child, child, child, child

Damn, hadn't seen that before. I still can't get my head around the fact that she's married to the Lonely Island's lead singer.

I cream myself when she references Camus in her lyrics.

The lyrics are their for a reason; they add to the mood of the song. Furthermore, some lyricists work hard to explore deep thematic concerns across concept albums. I admit, you should pay attention primarily to the 'music', but it would be vapid to sit passively through lyrics, especially in genres such as folk or hip-hop.

All art aspires to music, which is pure form.

Lyrics are inherently anti musical. Read poetry if you want good words.

So music and poetry cannot be combined? Nonsense. Music can be combined with film and painting, so why not poetry? Poetry can compliment music since both make use of rhythm.

Music combined with painting, eh? Does the sound come out of the oils or are you just a retard (is someone who values lyrics in music).

The only reason we have lyrics is to prevent every song from becoming scat vocal degeneracy.

Listen to music in another language.

I think the most "/lit/" musicians are the ones who work more with sounds than words, affecting perceptions with the specificity of their medium like good authors or especially poets do. Then again i listen to a lot of electronic and experimental stuff and I like to look for intersections in different mediums.

I'm probably going to get reamed out for listening to a Ska-Punk band but these guys (Streetlight Manifesto) are full of literary references. They have a whole song about authors who committed suicide and a lot of lyrics that touch on existentialism.
