Do you guys listen to music at any stage of the writing process? Personally, I always listen to something like GYBE or some other post-rock or psych-rock when I'm plotting, but I find it all too distracting while I actually write.

I find listening to music greatly helps when writing stream of consciousness but is distracting otherwise. Anything without words is good, and romantics in general are great to listen to while doing essays.

i usually listen to binaural beats which help with concentration, but when i listen to music, it's usually something like the orchestra at the bottom of the sea, or william basinski's disintegration loops.

I write until I get bored then I put on some music. The music kills the boredom while still allowing me to write.

yes, i listen to a 'box fan' in my bedroom 24/7 because i have some tinnitus from my brief stint in the military

so so so nice

other than that, no, human speech distracts the shit out of me

i hate how i repeat speech automatically in my head, over, over, and over. you say something and i say it 5 times to myself. we discuss something and it's like i'm fucking talking to myself i can't stand it

I find music makes me feel that what I am writing is better than it actually is.

I think the rhythm somehow subconsciously fools me into thinking my writing has them kind of rhythmic flow that music does. This is obviously apparent afterwards.

Always
The music drowns out the guy in my head telling me everything I'm putting down is absolute shit and that I shouldn't even bother anyway, I'll never make it.

Yes, but it has to be completely instrumental, no vocals at all (I always start thinking about the lyrics and it gets in the way putting my thoughts down properly).

Right now, I'm listening to a lot of Soma FM (Drone Zone mostly), and a few select tracks from the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack (no idea why 3-4 of the tracks on loop help me out so much, but they do).
