Cormac McCarthy and Thomas Pynchon. They will never win the Nobel now.

No. They won't ever win because they're white, male Americans.

I'm sure they will get much more acclaim when they die.

C.H. was the perfect non-systematic political thinker. Even his thoughts on religion were political. When the facts changed, he changed his mind. He was a concrete thinker and anti-philosophical in the good sense of not falling into traps and having a good bullshit detector (if you ignore his early Marxism, which he eventually grew out of, for the most part). He lived in Washington DC so he could be in on the action. He had a good memory. He was social and patched together the ideas of others, which is good for something like contemporary politics where it is impossible to go at it alone in your bedroom. He was principled and went after people like Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger. He did the fieldwork of traveling to the countries he wrote about. He understood the threat of Islam and realized not every war is fought for economic motives. He admired the United States. He destroyed people on shows like Hannity & Colmes. What more do you want? So what if he didn't have the patience to read Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and Kant?

>> No.6348915

It's 2015, sport. Get with the times. The Nobel Committee is not only sensitive to race, sex, and nationality, but they have a bias against America. This isn't news.

>So what if he didn't have the patience to read Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and Kant?

Or Marx, for that matter.

And what's wrong with that is the fact that he HAD to quote these people, tell anecdotes about them and use any other piece of easy, accessible information about them to support his points. He's like the guy who wants to attack Lenin but is not really interested in studying theory or history so he insteads find a blog where there's a nearly unlimited list of unsourced evil quotes and tales about him.

Hitchens wanted to come off as this highbrow, versatile thinker who can go anywhere from Hegel to Spike Lee with depth, but in reality his knowledge was more of a pool that is kilometers wide but a few millimeters deep.

>Thomas Pynchon

His work isn't up to the standard of the nobel, and he's made it clear that he doesn't want awards anyway, so why would he get the nobel.

McCarthy might win it one day, but his work seems to lack something, and I say this as a McCarthy fanboy.

Fuentes was way ahead on the list than either of those two, and he never even got a sniff.

If Jelinek can win one, Pynchon could have too. His output from the '60s and '70s was undeniably ground-breaking.

What are you talking about? Most scientists who win are AMERICAN scientists. Even if they aren't American themselves, they usually conduct their work in America. There is no bias, you're just mad that when it comes to literature, it's not just Americans who can produce worthwhile work.

Now you mention it, I'm surprised he hasn't won already. He never even gets mentioned in the yearly run up.

He must have pissed someone off.

He is also the only world-renowned writer that I can think of off the top of my head who looks like a Batman villain.

I think people still consider his poetry "difficult."

But I don't see how you release as many collections as Ashbery has and still be considered in any capacity a mystery. All he does is talk about his own process and what he is after in poetry.

I would have thought that would help with his nobelisciousness tbh.

Maybe the nobel people are just homophobes.

He seemed more like a vain and annoying atheist as opposed to any thing else...
And did not understand the origins of fascism.
Once called Stalinist Russia a theocracy.
Also, about him not being a marxist:
If you watch interviews he made shortly before he died,
he referred to himself as one.
