I really do not like this translation that penguin used. Its simplified in that it doesn't really grasp herdotusus meaning. I'm not saying its bad, just that penguin cheaped out here.

it's selincourt, right? his translation for the the campaigns of alexander was pretty great, shame it's not so good for the histories.

Feel free to offer a better one that's just as accurate. Grene's is the only one I can that's better without being substantially less accurate in certain parts.

Sure thing. I'm currently reading Macaulay's translation which is quite brilliant, as you might expect. Perhaps too mainstream for this board.

It's terrible, he uses euphemisms when things get too dirty for him.

Wow great discussion /lit/...

So what did you think about the seven's (Darius and others) usurpation of Smerdis the Magian's power from the throne? The ensuing conversation about the political forms of government - aristocracy, democracy, and monarchy - is one of my favorite conversations ever.

Did you catch Pericles last night on Thucydides tube? Jesus, he couldn't stop pontificating about the virtues of Athenian democracy. What a single issue voter.

I've tried reading it twice.
