I wonder how many of you who disclaim the intentional fallacy have even read Barthes's "Death of the Author", Wimsatt and Beardsley's "The Intentional Fallacy" or even Eliot's "Tradition and the Individual Talent".

death of the author is the most intuitively obvious idea in all of literary theory

let's say i as an author intend for my book to be the greatest book ever written

you read it an think its a piece of shit. my authorial intent has little if any influence on how the book will be interpreted. i really dont see why this is controversial

Because it forces you to ignore anything Dosotyevsky says about Raskolnikov outside of the exact text of Crime and Punishment, intimating that the artisitc value of the piece singular is worth more than the collected and supported idea that it forwards or even the complex psychology of the characters.

And Fuck You, that's why.

What is controversial is the absurd idea that the context of the book and the intent of the author is meaningless to understanding or interpreting the book. Which is what people like you always try to push.

I think it's acceptable to take some authorial context into account and include it as a part of the text as a whole, for example the schemata Joyce produced for Ulysses.
