I'd say art is something from which an individual can draw a meaning that can be shared with others; kind of like a tribute to our collective good.
I'd argue that if everyone were individualistic and not in any type of community whatsoever (every human being out for themselves and having zero connection with others) there would be no art as there would be no desire for collective understanding.
