Hey what does /lit/ think about digital literacy? Have any of you bought a Kindle or iPad?

I like to right poems and I want to do it on my laptop. I think I might have to stick with pen and paper and type them up when they are finished.

I just can't organise my thoughts on a screen...

>> No.624781

OP here-
Well I like writing out my poems too on paper. But would you ever read a book on a Kindle?

Its the ability to read and write, it's not an ability to hold an object which is the implied meaning of "Print or Digital Literacy?"

I don't own a kindle mostly because i like physically owning books/comics and having them line the walls of my room.

I do think the kindle is rather nifty and a good use of technology.

>> No.624859

Protip: If you still go to school print out books on A4 paper and put them inside a ring binder. That way you can read them in boring classes without drawing attention.

I have used both a Kindle and an iPad for reading and right now the iPad owns the Kindle HARD.

Also, the whole eyestrain thing is waaay overblown. I have used the iPad for a lot of heavy duty reading sessions and have never once had a problem.

It's also old people friendly! My grandmother owns an iPad and she enjoys the shit out of it. I upload her favorite tv shows/movies to it and she watches them in her bed.

She also loves reading books from the iPad because you can easily adjust the brightness and type size.

Oh yea, I pirate all my books/movies/tv shows!

feels fuckin awesome, man.

The only major complaint is that if you're on a 17 hour flight, or a long train ride, and you don't have access to power plugs...

The Kindle reader can spend the entire time reading a book. The iPad reader can only spend part of the time reading a book before losing all the battery.

>> No.624975

It does depend on how long you read books at a time, but I'd be pretty unhappy if I brought along a device that reads books on that one time I do fly from the US to China, and it died halfway through.

>> No.624983

>>624975
I'm often away from a plug for an entire day. I don't want my fucking book dying on me on the way home. Shit is lame. iPad is nice, but it's extremely expensive for what it is--an underpowered, locked up computer with NO physical keyboard...

>> No.624989

I'm guessing that this objects are accepted, but come with limitations just like iPods.

>> No.625008

>>624983
the ipad is a 500 dollar entertainment machine. I agree that it isn't great for creating content, but it is fucking awesome for watching/reading/ browsing the web.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to write a paper on it, but 500 dollars is an agreeable price when you consider what it is capable of.

Especially the fact that the second best ereader out right now (the Kindle DX) only costs 10 dollars less than the ipad...and it doesn't even come to close to being able to do what the ipad can.

About the battery issue, I can get a good 14 hours of reading on a single charge so that probably isn't a problem for most people.

>> No.625014

Using a Kindle2 here. I love it. Easy on the eyes and battery lasts forever with wireless turned off. I use it 3 or more hours a day. New software updates coming out are allowing for better management of the content you own and also better pdf veiwing with zoom features and what not. I read often and all the ebooks I've paid for and saved money on compared to bookstore price (I've pirated a lot also) have already paid for the kindle. I like the ipad, although I don't own one, but I wouldn't want to use it to read with. I am holding out to buy an HP Slate to use for school, etc. It won't be used for replacing my kindle, but rather used as a more convenient laptop.

>> No.625043

Sony pocket size ebook reader is lovely. Small enough to fit in your back pocket like a paperback - though I haven't tested what happens if you sit on it a wooden chair - battery lasts for the rest of your life, really nice feel to hold just like a book but lighter, easy to read the text even in broad daylight, easy to adjust the font size. For reading I'd rather have it than a paper book now. Does toss all else except be perfect for reading.
No, i don't work for them!

Sony Pocket Reader is my favorite of this gen of e-readers. The *only* problem I have is that I often like to read in very strong sunlight. When I page forward or back in the direct glare of the sun, the pages end up being extremely washed out. Problem is easily solved by covering the screen while refreshing the page.

>> No.625048

I personally don't get why people want to spend about 50 books worth of money on a device that lets them read books, except that they still have to buy the ebooks as well. Sometimes at a higher price than the print version.
Plus when I buy something I like to be able to hold it, not realize that I spent money on procuring a very large number (for non-nerds: every file is just a series of ones and zeroes, which in effect just represents a *very* large number). Or perhaps I'm just too much of a geek because I already spend most of my days at work staring at a screen and I need to compensate by doing geeky stuff not in front a screen.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I have a Kindle and I love it. The screen looks like an actual page (No glare, you can read it in direct sunlight, etc). It's smaller and more portable then most books I read so I can carry it around anywhere. I can get on 4chan on it, and if I ever get tired of reading one book, I have over a hundred others to choose from.

Plus, free books.
