I thought it was kind of the point that the reader gets frustrated with Mersault's unwillingness to argue his way out of the prison, to make the reader care more for the life of Mersault than the character does.

The realization that death is inevitable and the irrationality of himself justxtaposed to the world he lives in causes him to truly grasp the absurdity of existence.

You don't have to agree with him, but it is a philosophical novel. You should at least see what he's trying to convey by the end.
