What the fuck, this guy could have easily avoided prison but he did nothing at all. Was he trying to be an edgy atheist?

Wow it's almost as if he was interesting as fuck.

>> No.6182289

Yes, that's exactly what he was trying to do. Camus' philosophy's incoherence is illustrated by the irrational, inexplicable, and unrelatable nature of his characters. French existentialism's popularity is a sign that the human race is gradually losing its mind.

He also committed perjury when he said Raymond didn't beat the shit out of his wife.

I thought it was kind of the point that the reader gets frustrated with Mersault's unwillingness to argue his way out of the prison, to make the reader care more for the life of Mersault than the character does.

Absurdism is a form of existentialism. Sartre isn't the only existentialist. Camus pretended to not be an existentialist so that he could drum up controversy by opposing himself to Sartre, who's a better philosopher than Camus but is still shit.
Camus' claims that he wasn't an existentialist collapse upon examination.

>> No.6185270

>>6182274
he stood by his morals. he didnt want to be perceived as theist so he refuses to admit. that being said, its a shit book and if camus really believes there is no reason to living, he should have just killed himself. believing suicide is falling for the absurd is bullshit. he just came up with the loosest argument to not killing himself. if he had just said he was scared of dying, i would have given him credit. but he didnt, so he is a pussy.

The two of them are the worst examples of philosophy the 20th century (or the post-Cartesian epoch in general) has to offer. It's literally the minimum quantity of quality separating the two.

not this argument again. if you believe life is meaningless, there is no reason to commit suicide because that would imply some meaning in death therefore some meaning in life

>He achieved nothing by dying
The realization that death is inevitable and the irrationality of himself justxtaposed to the world he lives in causes him to truly grasp the absurdity of existence.

You don't have to agree with him, but it is a philosophical novel. You should at least see what he's trying to convey by the end.
