So a friend forwarded this to me, looks like The Gunslinger movies finally got a green light and may actually be made.

-mind-trio/

Now, I'm really torn on this. The Dark Tower books are among my favorite novels of all time, I love the universe, and seeing a movie done right would be AMAZING. I'm not the type to automatically discount an adaptation, nor am I cynical enough to say that there haven't been good ones (Fight Club, Trainspotting come to mind), but seeing books I've held in such high regard for so long get butchered on screen is gonna suck. It goes without saying that most adaptation of Kings work fall FAR SHORT of being considered "good", but who knows...

So, to any Dark Tower fans out there, how does this news strike you? Elated, or horrified?

What is /lit/'s viewpoint on movie adaptations? Any that /lit/ feels were actually on par with the novels?

>> No.614797

I'm a mixed of elated and horrified, I just really really hope that it's done right, and I have a hard time believing that it could be good in only 3 movies

>I have a hard time believing that it could be good in only 3 movies

Same...it's easily 4 times the content of LOTR and a trilogy barely did it justice.

They should do it each book gets a movie, although even so the latter novels would probably need to be split like the last Harry Potter flick...

>> No.614821

Make each movie in the trilogy 6 hours long, and it'll be great

>> No.614822

>>614812

I agree completely, it's the main thing that I'm worried about with the movies

>> No.614824

Think Viggo Mortenson as Roland would be too much of a stretch? Think it's too Aragorn like?

I would said Clint Eastwood 20 years ago, but he's way too old now ; ;

>> No.615005

I thought it would work better as a miniseries since there is so fucking much ground to cover.
A miniseries originally was going to be made by JJ Abrams and I believe the two guys who are doing Lost, but they turned it down eventually.

it's going to be a film trilogy AND a tv series.

In late April 2010 was announced that Ron Howard will helm the film adaption as director. Bringing with him Akiva Goldsman who will be writing the script, and Howard's Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer to produce[22] With the plan being to condense the 7 book story into a Trilogy on film.

Nothing about a television series. I don't follow directors though, so is Howard good or not?

Two Oscars, for what that's worth. Some good films, many terrible ones. He did the film adaptations of Dan Brown's books, which were awful. Mixed bag.

The writer did Batman and Robin. So yeah.
