Neal Stephenson is a good writer, despite having his own eccentricities of style. Snow Crash is obviously immature, but Cryptonomicon is a legitimately good novel, and in general I will stan for Neal Stephenson all day.

I had the advantage of reading The Confusion first, which is really the only great part. But there are so many better books than this it hurts to read his name anywhere on /lit/. C'est la vie.

I disagree. I found Cryptonomicon better written but otherwise just as bad (think plot, content--actually it's worse in these departments) as Snow Crash. I'm glad I read the Baroque Cycle first, the depiction of Enoch in Cryptonomicon turned me off to him.

I read Cryptonomicon first; it was long but pretty awesome. The first Baroque Cycle book was kind of a slog, though, and I haven't felt like finishing the cycle. I did read Snow Crash after that, and while it was obviously immature in some ways, it was just bursting with this youthful awesomeness.
