I don't understand how this book warrants a spot on /lit/'s starter kit. Is there some kind of underlying message I missed here? Was it just too deep for me?
Character development and plot progression are practically nonexistent, the author wastes so much time describing the most unimportant details, the prose is atrocious, and the boys hardly did anything "savage" enough to push a theme of barbarism.

It's because the British and American meanings of corn are different. It Britain, corn is a generic name for various kinds of grains, whereas in America it means maize specifically. The translation in question was a British one, read by an American, hence the misunderstanding.

you can almost divide his fiction into serious and nonserious, GR, M&D, and AtD comprising the serious side. The first time I read through AtD I got about halfway, got bored, gave up. second read through a few months later I went cover to cover, and after fully pushing through the last two hundred pages were fucking gold. The Traverses can bore you shitless but it eventually gets good. I figured it for Pynchon taking a McCarthy & Oakley Hall nod for most of the book, but its worth it by the end. Better than Gravity's Rainbow IMO having read both.
