Since Christianity teaches us to repent, abstain, love and devote yourself to God, does this mean that enjoying worldly pleasures such as beauty and art is unchristian?

Should art only exist to glorify God? Should it not exist at all?

No art is incredibly Christian.

Most of the older medieval churches would have been filled with colors and tapestries depicting gods glory.
The modern concept of Christianity being boring and drab is a misnomer; Christianity was about celebrating God and art is one of the best ways to do that.

The visual arts are just another form of communication.
You know that, right?
The vast majority of Christian art just communicates narratives in just another way.

Given that God is the creator of everything, all is to be appreciated and enjoyed as creation, though it is sin to enjoy them as ends in themself.

Came here to post this.

Also, by the way, it's not just because the theme of an artwork is sacred that you can call it sacred art.

There was and is a huge ideological battle between those who knew images would derail from the thing they were trying to teach and others who understood it was the only way to spread the teachings. This is not just a Christian problem, but for example, it took ages for Buddhism to produce images, one of the first was the footprint of Buddha, that is to say "look, he is not this image, but he's been here". Indexical signs. In Christianity, the Byzantine icons is where is at, with reversed perspective and all of the most advanced techniques to tell you what was worth telling and nothing else. In Islam, the debate on representations of Mohammed is the most clear example. There is an hypnotic effect to images that ancient religious circles knew very well. That's why they had the greatest care. It's only after the reformation of church, the easy printing processes, the renaissance shops and all that came afterwards that we started to live in this world full of images of fuck everything. After photography even more so. With the internet I can safely say we are all doomed.

Perhaps not: the more we see images, the less they may have an impact on us.

It's very christian. Some paintings employ a form of sacred geometry, colors and symbolism. Granted if you don't understand the symbolism then it's just a painting, but they are nonetheless important representations of biblical figures and events.

Religion is a trap son
This is coming from a believer
If you feel in your heart that what you are doing is wrong then its a sin
If you are unsure no blame can be pinned to you as long as you tried to come to a conclusion with reasonable thought
Just avoid what you think is mortal sin. The rest is up to god to show you the way.

most christian theology is born out of plato, and platonic forms

art can be described as fulfilling forms of beauty and thus, godly in nature, for all good forms are associated with the divine, for thats where theyre born out of

thus, art is christian, even if its not directly glorifying god

no it's not unchristian and the application of art by christianity is historically very context-sensitive so please learn about that context before pretending you know whether or not art in itself is unchristian

>> No.6131190

I don't know about Christianity specifically, but I'd say Abrahamism is inherently iconoclastic. Abrahamists borrow the idea of art from pagans, but any fundamentalist sect will ultimately come to the conclusion that depicting things is heretical.

There can only be one creator.

I think the bigger issue is lavish spending on art when so many people are in need and poverty. Most Christians are astoundingly hypocritical in this respect in general.
