Does anyone read the Scott Pilgrim novels?

I like them a lot. It's a very modern and exciting story, the artwork is charming, locations are vibrant and true to life, hilarious

>> No.6072153

yeah i just finished the 6th volume yesterday. It's a really fun graphic novel although I have to admit that Scott Pilgrim himself is a little shit

>novels
you mean picture books?

Yes I own all of the colored/hardcover books except for vol. 6 that comes out soon in hardcover.

All of them, they're pretty great. I hate myself for whatvim about to say, but they're much better than th ebmovie. The movie lost all the feeling of the books since they had to condense it down. Plus a lot of the acting and scripting was garbage time. Wallace is my fucking gay nigga

>Novels

LMAO

>> No.6072816

They're "graphic novels". Which is a fairly stupid term when you think about it because graphic novels don't take anywhere near as long to read as novels, and therefore don't require the same level as thought.

That said the Scott Pilgrim stories make for fun fantasy romcom stuff with delightfully over the top humor.

>a little shit

You mean he's a realistic portrayal of someone at his position in life?

>> No.6072860

terrible crock of shit

the author has the humor and poetic eloquence of your usual shithead 20 something who spent his childhood playing videogames

retro banality basically

dialogue written by a manchild who has no idea how humans speak. Almost no characterization beyond "angry", "annoying", "naive", "aloof", etc. All of the characters except for the asian girl are miserable people. For a "humor comic", there very few actual jokes across 100s of pages, at best it's quirky. The story is made up as it goes along, I don't think any editing went into the writing process (if it did, it sure doesn't show since the dialogue is garbage). The plot is just a sitcom plot stretched out. It's biggest selling point is it references nintendo games from the late 80s and early 90s.

The art is equally bad. For a character-based rom com, there is zero character design.Everyone has the same faceshape and nose (a horizontal line), you have to guess who people are based on their hair design. The later books have some nice backgrounds thanks to the creator hiring actual artists to do the work.

i like them because they are basically set in my backyard and i've been to most of the settings (venues, record stores, etc.), so it hits home a bit. even more so now that a lot of them are closed down

length doesn't mean more level of thought. Graphic novels are typically just written simpler.

The goofy humor made them seem pretty happy

wow, didn't realise they existed. added to wishlist

i liked the series. i liked the pop culture references, the humour, etc. sure they are the book equivalent of a chinese takeaway but i think that is entirely ok. i liked the film, too

i think i also agree with >>6074817 that Seconds is better

hey i'm in a good mood today. beers all round!

The movie should have been animated, with literally anyone but Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim.

>> No.6075567

>>6075549
Yeah, he was completely wrong for the role. Too awkward and aloof.

Scott strikes me as more cocky and hyperactive.

>> No.6075572

>>6075567
It's somewhat that, but I think Michael Cera played it too cocky, in fact. I suspect he's a douche in real life ever since he got cast in a bunch of shitty pseudo-independent movies. He was cool in Superbad and Arrested Development, though.

>> No.6075579

>>6075572
Yeah, he's a bit smug.

Comic Scott's cockiness is a bit more charming, like a naive kid. Didn't pick that up from Cera at all.

There are several deep and thought-provoking graphic novels (though I'm not sure Scott Pilgrim is one).

I liked Lost at Sea the most from his works. But all of them are quite entertaining.
