Obviously you should be sad, you dolt. A nurse who was just trying to do her job almost got strangled to death, then a giant schizophrenic with dangerous delusions of persecution about an all-powerful "combine" murdered a man and then escaped from a mental hospital to kill again. I can't imagine a worse ending.

It's a shame that the doctors had to resort to lobotomizing McMurphy, but he was a dangerous patient, violently attacking staff, and it was probably the best medical option they had at the time back then, since antipsychotic drugs were a lot less sophisticated. At least he was cured of the worst symptoms of his mental disorder shortly before he died.
