I enjoyed American Psycho but this is the edgiest line I have ever read in my life.

The whole passage oozes of edge:

…there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there. It is hard for me to make sense on any given level. Myself is fabricated, an aberration. I am a noncontingent human being. My personality is sketchy and unformed, my heartlessness goes deep and is persistent. My conscience, my pity, my hopes disappeared a long time ago (probably at Harvard) if they ever did exist. There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it, I have now surpassed. I still, though, hold on to one single bleak truth: no one is safe, nothing is redeemed. Yet I am blameless. Each model of human behavior must be assumed to have some validity. Is evil something you are? Or is it something you do?

It's enjoyable trash.

>anon still doesn't know what edgy means

Edgyness is when a teenager who would never do anything his parents disapprove of posts about the darkness cunsuming his soul on an internet forum, not even realizing that he's just parroting something he picked up from watching too many chinese cartoons. In the context of fiction, these kinds of statements a character makes about their 'dark side' can be edgy when words are clearly being put into their mouths for the sake of controversy or appeal to a specific audience, eventhough they aren't justified.

Let me throw out this recommendation-post, just in case someone is interested.

>Start with less than zero if you want to see a single, passive protagonist stand by idely and watch as the people around him do one horrible thing after another.
Or
>Start with rules of attraction for multiple protagonists. The stories are intertwined, but everyone's stuck in their own disconnected reality.

>Continue with American Psycho. I suggest you listen to the audiobook, since the pages of item descriptions are tiring to read, but actually kind of meditative when they're being read to you.
>Now it's time for Lunar Park, Bret Easton Ellis' true autobiography. >implying Seriously though. It's his best book by far, especially if you're familiar with his other works.

I haven't read imperial bedrooms yet, so I don't know whether it's worth a recommendation.

Not edgy like a pissed off 12 year old emo kid

The passage itself is perfectly acceptable, but when you get to those lines it withdraws from Patrick's relaying of his inhumanity and seems more fitting for a Slipknot song. It also departs from his characterization as throughout the novel he isn't painted as a sort of misanthropic FUCK DA WURLD simpleton but rather an empty shell of a man who is constantly wrestling with his inner demons.
