Christianity, at that one time they dared to show what they are: fiery, frightening, willing to sacrifice others, powerful and wicked. Gothic era is the best era. Their churches from that time constantly amaze me. They are absolutely marvellous. Make feel irrelevant and small.

The poetry of Blake and Milton's understanding of the Bible are relevant as well, and we are on a bleeding literature forum anyways.

"He doth give His joy to all:
He becomes an infant small,
He becomes a man of woe,
He doth feel the sorrow too.

Think not thou canst sigh a sigh,
And thy Maker is not by:
Think not thou canst weep a tear,
And thy Maker is not near.

O He gives to us His joy,
That our grief He may destroy:
Till our grief is fled and gone
He doth sit by us and moan."

Islamic art/architecture tends to look like shit up close IME, and while to be fair maybe I've never seen any of the real good stuff, on the other hand there are plenty of backwater churches and cathedrals that have really incredible, detailed artwork that was done by some local/provincial type. It's not without merit, but Islamic aesthetics aren't the best.

>Islamic art/architecture tends to look like shit up close IME,

Attention to detail has been one of the most impressive features of lots of the places I've visited, especially in Morocco/Spain. This hasn't been my experience at all.

>on the other hand there are plenty of backwater churches and cathedrals that have really incredible, detailed artwork that was done by some local/provincial type.

This is also true of the Islamic world in my experience, or at least those parts of it with well-established local styles. I certainly found it to be the case in Morocco and Turkey.

>It's not without merit, but Islamic aesthetics aren't the best.

I completely disagree. Painting, music, and some other kinds of art are probably better elsewhere, but no other religion's architecture comes close.

My interest in Islamic architecture has probably biased me toward it, because I don't see the elegance of Catholic architecture nearly as readily as others seem to. Even some truly lovely cathedrals seem a bit vulgar by comparison.

The worst fucking part is the asymmetry. It kills me. The main movement of the pilgrimage is radial and the architecture should reflect this.

They need to bulldoze everything they've built and take a minimalist approach.
