Hi /lit/

Now I am very new here but began IJ as it seemed like a great starting point to become more acquainted with this board.
I have made my way to about page 400 and is it honestly even worth finishing?
The book really just drags and I think DFW is great but to what end?

I would rather start Lord Of The Rings.

Any thoughts?

Don't read to fit in with others opinions read for yourself. If you don't like it put it doen

Ok I see that point, I guess I am also asking does it ever accelerate or is it just a horrible slog through its entirety?

Nothing wrong with reading some pop culture fitction

especially if you are just getting into reading, try some novellas or some easier reads and find out what genre you like.

Keep in mind /lit/ hates anything too mainstream and can have some pretty awful recomendations (not everyone wants to start with the fucking greeks)

lotr can be a little dense at times, a little overly descriptive for my likings, maybe because I saw the movies first I didn't appreciate as much

You actually had me until then

It's a book to be read with a certain mindset. As you read more you get used to catching the role that was meant for the reader to take, in some cases that makes the reading easier and in others it's the only way to enjoy and get something from the book.
Just, read more and try to check the short stories, if the writer has some of those, before jumping into the novels.

Good luck, hope you enjoy your stay.

I think it's the punchline. Walking the dinosaur and all that.

I know nothing about what is good I just have heard that LOTR is good

It's not the same kind of good. Though if you feel IJ is a drag at this point (where the really boring chapters are already behind and you're supposed to have a grasp on the characters, tone and what makes it enjoyable) - I'm not sure you'll find LotR much more exciting

IJ is a meme by a meme author

it's bad; only slightly better than Joyce's Ulysses.

catch 22 and lot 49 is a much better /lit/ starter kit. call em, the number books. yea

the only reason that people say he is a meme is that so many people on lit talked about him since he's so good
