Basic skills, know how to sort by the Library of congress/duodecimal system and you'll have an edge when it comes it interviewing. But it's really just an issue of who gets there first.... most people don't apply.

Standard is minimum wage, but college pays a little higher and I get more varied work.

Shelf-read (scan bookcases to see if anything is outta order)

Tidy up at the end of the day.

You need to be paitent, and willing to work in repetitive job tasks without dying. You usually do not deal with clients, which is an added bonus.

I love my job, some people can't stand dealing with things as slow as shelf-reading, but I take it as a zen-like chance for me to become nothing, engross myself in work and loose whatever tension has been bothering me. You also end up discovering lots of cool books you wouldn't know otherwise. The local library jobs are much more strenuous than the college ones; always apply to those libraries first!

no, it's true. In my situation I didn't know how to check out books until I reached the college- they didn't teach me! You are rarely approached, and when you are it is usually by an incredibly harmless person seeking where to find a book. And that is actually a nice break.

Meh, if you can't concentrate on your work it may be difficult. But almost all entry-level jobs are monotonous, at the least in this one you get to look at all the cool books
