Holy shit

I believe I'm one of the few who preferred "Grapes," even though it's (surprisingly) even more homiletic than "East of Eden."

I'm reading that next. The only two Steinbecks I've read are Mice and Eden, but the latter is so good.

The Pearl is pretty good too.

This book pretty much set off my spiritual developement. I can hardly compare any other book I've read to it, save for maybe Red Book by C.G. Jung

I said the same thing before I promptly put it back on the shelf.

Almost 700 pages about 2 families in California doesn't sound too appealing tbh.

1. Go back to the shelf
2. Reach out with your hand and grab the book
3. Open it on page one
4. Read

It's my 2nd favourite book after One Hundred Years of Solitude. I personally feel it's miles better than anything else he's written.

The only part I didn't like was when it was way too heavy handed with the Cain and Abel passage in the book. Like a slap in the face after sweet caresses.

is Steinbeck good? I always assumed he was someone you read when you were first getting into books and then quickly forgot about once you found the better stuff

I read this a few years ago and loved it. I can't remember it too well aside from it relying on a central biblical reference and the characters and scenarios being well though out and interesting.

What was the significance of "thou mayest" again? Free will, basically? And I agree with above poster, the Chinese servant was a great character, as was the villainess (Kate?)

LOVED the ending to east of eden. I love when a small line like that can be delivered in such a powerful way because of the world they created around it.

no one mentioned wayward bus itt. that's another one of my favorites. the characters are really great in it.
