INFINITE MEME

by David Foster Meme

YEAR OF MEME

I am seated in a meme, surrounded by memes and memes. My meme is consciously congruent to the meme of my hard meme. This is a cold meme in University Meme, meme-memed, Meme-hung, double-memed against the November meme, insulated from Administrative memes by the reception meme outside, at which Uncle Meme, Mr. deMeme and I were lately received.
I am in here.
Three memes have resolved into place above summer-weight memes and half-Memes across a polished pine conference meme shiny with the spidered meme of an Arizona meme. These are three Memes — of Memes, Academic Memes, Athletic Memes. I do not know which meme belongs to whom.
I believe I appear neutral, maybe even pleasant, though I've been coached to err on the meme of neutrality and not attempt what would feel to me like a pleasant meme or meme.
I have committed to crossing my memes I hope carefully, meme on meme, memes together in the meme of my memes. My memes are mated into a mirrored meme of what manifests, to me, as the letter M. The interview meme's other memes include: the Meme's Meme of Meme, its varsity meme meme, and Meme prorector Mr. A. deMeme. M.M. is beside me; the others sit, stand and stand, respectively, at the meme of my meme. The meme meme jingles meme-meme. There is meme vaguely digestive about the meme's meme. The high-traction meme of my complimentary Nike meme runs parallel to the wobbling meme of my meme's half-meme, here in his capacity as Meme, sitting in the meme to what I hope is my immediate meme, also facing Memes.
The Meme at left, a lean yellowish meme whose fixed meme nevertheless has the impermanent meme of meme stamped into uncooperative meme, is a personality-meme I've come lately to appreciate, the meme who delays meme of any meme from me by relating my meme of the meme for me, to me. Passed a meme of computer-memes by the shaggy meme of a Meme at center, he is speaking more or less to these memes, smiling down.
'You are Harold Memecandenza, eighteen, meme of secondary-meme meme approximately one meme from now, attending the Enfield Tennis Meme, Enfield, Massachusetts, a boarding meme, where you reside.' His reading memes are rectangular, meme-shaped, the memes at top and bottom. 'You are, according to Coach Meme and 30a regionally, nationally, and continentally ranked junior tennis player, a potential O.N.A.N.C.A.A. athlete of substantial promise, recruited by Coach Meme via meme with Dr. Meme here commencing .. . Meme of this meme.' The top meme is removed and brought around neatly to the meme of the meme, at memes. 'You have been in meme at the Enfield Tennis Meme since age seven.’
I am debating whether to risk scratching the right meme of my meme, where there is a meme.

Also, that Vineland joke is not only unfunny but completely fucking inane. DFW was by all accounts a Pynchon fan, the claims of his not having read Pynchon come from his not having read The Crying of Lot 49 at the time of Broom of The System's release, (a point raised after one critic compared the two calling Broom more or less a ripoff) and would have no reason to be angry about finding Vineland on somebody's shelf, odds being that he owned Vineland himself and, not being a pretentious-materialist on 4chan who gets their opinions on literature from recommendation flowcharts(?) probably enjoyed the book. "But even critics hated Vineland!" It's post-modernism, there will always be critics who hate it, critics hated Against The Day. "But they loved Gravity's Rainbow!" In retrospect, not to mention it was because of this retrospective masterpiece status that Vineland was so initially bashed, because it stood in the shadow of the now mammoth Gravity's Rainbow, a book Pynchon would never and will never be able to top, if not literarily, but culturally and iconically.

And but so remove your fucking 'joke'.

IIRC the fear wasn't that he wouldn't be able to go through with it, per se, but that he would fuck it up.

The person he knew tried to kill himself by inhaling car fumes or something like that but just ended putting himself into a coma for a little while and giving himself serious brain damage -- Wallace wrote to a friend something to the effect of "I just know that if there's one person who'll fuck up their suicide attempt it'll be me."

A really sad idea lightly clothed in self-depreciating humor -- per usual.

You guys remember "The Devil is a Busy Man"? From BIWHM. I think the ending line of that snippet (and the whole narrative of the snippet itself) describes his biggest fear:

"Thus, I showed an unconscious and, seemingly, natural, automatic ability to both deceive myself and other people, which, on the "motivational level," not only completely emptied the generous thing I tried to do of any true value, and caused me to fail, again, in my attempts to sincerely be what someone would classify as truly a "nice" or "good" person, but, despairingly,

> cast me in a light to myself which could only be classified as "dark," "evil," or "beyond hope of ever sincerely becoming good."

Ugh, for all the memes and jokes I've made at DFW's expense, he really did seem like a good person who couldn't get over whatever mental demons he placed upon himself. It seems like every video of his interactions with people and his attempts to explain ideas and concepts aren't so much autistic as desperate - desperate in the way that a guy who's incredibly thirsty and dry-throated attempts to ask for water. Regardless of the quality of his ideas and theories on life or modern culture, it all seemed to be coming from this same source, a well of sincerity and self-hatred that he could only tap in an indirect way lest he revealed too much of himself. Certainly not the kind of guy that could stand being directly exposed for all the world to see, yet ended up revealing so much by how he tried to conduct himself and be as perfect as possible.

no. he was clearly troubled enough to kill himself (because he knew he hadn't any talent), but he seems to have retained a juvenile sense of himself, seemed to cling to a narcissistic idea of himself, that people really really cared what he had to say, that they cared how he presented himself, that what he said was "lucid" etc.

he goes over all the permutations of this in his fiction with his depressed and anxious characters, but at some point it's time to just cut the gordian knot of neuroticism and give it a rest with giving a shit about what other people think about you if there aren't real concrete consequences to their ideas of you

anyway, i didn't know the guy so this is mostly just gossipy shitposting, but that's my two cents

>> No.5858559

>>5858543
I wouldn't go so far as to say he had no talent - I greatly enjoy a lot of his work, though it's rarely because it screams 'incredible talent'. It seems like he knew what would make for interesting topics to write about, but he wasn't asking the right questions or wasn't approaching it from the right angle. He threw half-assed ideas together that started from some legitimately good source of inspiration and then tried connecting dots that weren't necessarily there. Sometimes he made valid connections, but they feel more accidental than anything. In any case, I think his anxiety over his image and whatnot might have stemmed from his upbringing but was only aggravated by mental illness. He couldn't just break out of that mindset because depressive episodes kept coming back and medication was only a temporary relief. I've never experienced depression myself, at least not on any scale of someone who could be pushed to suicide from its severity, so I try not to cast any judgements on someone who isn't acting in an entirely logical state-of-mind like DFW.

But it's undeniable that footnotes completely fuck-up narrative flow.

Read Nabokov's great introduction to his translation of A Hero of Our Times.

You should only read footnotes if you're going to read the novel twice, the first time ignoring them entirely and the second go-through picking them apart.

Footnotes suck ass.
