But I still know almost nothing about wide swaths of things that should be in my intellectual wheelhouse, so it's somewhat justified I suppose. I hope it's just a result of it being harder to feel you completely have a grasp on things as you become more educated.
I think there are also some people who feel like they are never intelligent enough or at all, in an almost pathological way, and I may be one of those people.

It's just another form of vanity. Like people who never feel they are pretty enough, thin enough, ripped enough. You base your value as a person on your intelligence (and probably do the same for everyone else) so you feel insecure about whether you're smart enough to be a valuable person. Because you have self-esteem issues you will never feel you are smart enough to have worth as a human being.

I agree with you, but it a strange sort of vanity if I hate standing out as the smart one at least some of the time. Mostly, I'd rather be the nice or helpful one.
I actually specifically don't base how I value other people on intelligence or try not to, and only feel this way so strongly with regard to myself.
To some extent I also think, maybe reasonably, that much of what people think is intelligent about me what essentially handed to me by upper middle-class circumstance and I have little reason to be very proud of it.
