Lets talk about philosophy and athleticism.

Does /lit/ keep themselves in good health? From a philosophical standpoint, why be of good health?

live a more fulfilling life? exercise in general clears your head and gives you a fresher, more optimistic perspective on life. Being fit is something you have to put in effort for, something other people admire. It's an accomplishment for you to feel good about and to show people that you are hard-working

is there a reason i should exercise? i'm unconcerned with achieving peak physical fitness, as my normal habits are relatively healthy, and i'm too autistic to ever approach a girl or properly respond to one's advances, so trying to become more attractive seems pointless. allegedly it's supposed to make you happier, but i was exercising regularly at the most miserable point of my life hoping my outlook would improve, and it never did. in fact, i've actually become significantly happier since i stopped exercising regularly, though i wouldn't argue the two are connected, as other factors contributed to my increased happiness.

your diet contributes to fitness too, if you changed it too drastically and combined it with training you could have just been overworked and overtired. You don't have to kill yourself when you exercise, just push enough so you are a little uncomfortable so your abilities will grow. Also exercise isn't an miracle cure for your problems. It helps but cant solve the issues you're dealing with

It's balance, not aesthetics.

It's an area of my life that's lacking.

I lost 30 lbs. but that was the easy part. All I had to do was stop consuming trash. Now I'm on these last 20 and it's not going away without some exercise. I just have to change my mindset. This physical aspect of myself isn't optional. It's not the occasional burst of effort. A long walk and some calisthenics have to become parts of my daily life.

I'm not even in it to look good to others or myself. I just think about what kind of person can't demonstrate competency in all areas that humans are born to fulfill. No individual is above or below any purpose that our minds and bodies have been designed to excel in. I can't just say I'm not "good at" or "interested in" the mechanical movements and complex systems that cooperate to form my body. It's as ridiculous as when I hear people don't like to think or laugh or create.

Aristotle taught in a gymnasium, and was a talented enough wrestler to earn the nickname "Platon," meaning "broad-shouldered." In parts of Europe he's recognized only by that name.

The Greeks believed in fitness and learning the limits of the body. Moreover, a serious discussion about war and sport is a key element of arguably the greatest Greek work, The Iliad.

As for "why be in good health," the question is obscured by the value judgments inherit. Mistaking notions of value with truth is a sophomoric philosophical mistake, though a forgivable one.

That said, whenever this argument pops up I'm often forced to side with the meatheads, who believe their fitness to be "right." This is unfortunate, but limpwrists who believe sport to be fundamentally anti-intellectual deserve more scorn.

From a philosophical standpoint one should, logically, accept that we are physical beings, and that our bodies affect our thinking. Thus one could say it is a philosophical duty to keep oneself healthy enough that one's body won't affect one's mind in a negative way.

This is my exact experience with exercising.

I think if you have insecurities about your health or body (too fat, too weak etc.) it will help you immensely to exercise. You'll feel better, your insecurities will vanish in time. If you don't have such insecurities, there just isn't enough reward to justify spending hours at the gym regularly working hard.

Look at Zyzz for example. He was skinny as fuck and probably had insecurities about it. That's what made him so driven to exercise.

Your body and your mind are linked. The substance and the accidents relate against each other, and they should reflect each other. As you exercise the one, so exercise the other, and the fitness of the one will improve the other, and vice versa.

/lit/ has such a better mindset on this than /fit/ does. Lately I was questioning the purpose of working out and eating healthy. It seems the people around me are just doing it for vanity, or because society says its a norm.

I agree with everyone in this thread, healthy body, healthy mind.

Which is strange because finding the time can be kind of stressful. But if I can find the time to read, practice piano, ace my classes, and work I don't see why I can't find the time to continue to do some push ups, or choose healthier alternatives.

It would be much harder to argue against good health, than for it. But where could you place fitness in philosophy?

Good health affects the senses and arguably improves the ability to use your senses for perceiving your end of reality.

There is a ethical argument about body building, in that you use up more resources to build and sustain your body functions, whereas in endurance training, you only need additional resources once, during the immediate training.

>> No.5843157

when you run through different terrain types, woods, mountains, valleys. run with animals, run in pursuit animals. with no statistical objectives, just your own current absolute physical limits.

all narrative is defined by the physical, without language and symbolism. your existence is unfiltered by the medium of civilisation and modernity.
it can serve as tabula rasa for your social conditioning.
as your cells fight for oxygen, cannibalise your muscles for energy. when you feel your oxygenated blood surge in waves and the eternal wait between each feels like a death for this ephemeral machine.
new perspectives are gained, illusions lost and meanings realised.

i dunno what connotations athleticism conjure for others, but for me it's about realising the choice of an objective in the absolute, as such to accept death, by which every iota of "alive" is known, it's the simplest philosophy, and can't be attained any other way.
