What are your thoughts on this book /lit/? I'm just getting into it..

rather incredible, make sure you know about russian student's nihilistic ideas at the time to understand

it's a book about christfag morals

don't read it unless you just want to say "I read dostoevsky" or else you think anybody who violates god's law should be put to death

I liked it better when someone posted that one with Jack Bauer on the cover.

no it isn't
it's about how society's irrational rules drive a talented young nihilist to murder and how, even knowing that there are no rules in life, there are still consequences and that is a great injustice

Well, from Raskolnikov's point of view, it wasn't a choice. While I agree you with completely, his severe depression caused by being crushingly poor most likely contributed to him being unable to sustain work.

nonsense. What makes him so pecuiliarily R.O.? the blatant racism? that he named the parable 'the Grand Inquisitor' rather than the instead of 'the Great Oprichnik'?
Dostoyevskiy was most obviously an utopian socialist, that's why his materialists and nietzscheans are so dumb, repulsive and utterly unconvincing. It's him winking to your socialist self, telling you he doesn't mean it.

Curiously you're almost right, what with him being in the Petrashevsky Circle then being exonerated immediately before being shot, then he went all Godfag on us.

>> No.581039

Why does he always have characters like Rogozhin, Raskolnikov, Ivan and Stavrogin, who are intelligent, with no redeemable social features that are generally sociopathic nihilists?

Is it some kind of moral statement he's making by positioning them with he likes of Myshkin and Alyosha?

Serious question here.

>> No.581052

>Is it some kind of moral statement he's making by positioning them with he likes of Myshkin and Alyosha?
He clearly is, by making them noble or bourgeois rather than orphan like de Sade's Justine

>> No.581063

>>581039
Yeah basically he's saying were all responsible for each other and consequences come no matter what. Only those without a concious can 'get away' with things. Ivan realizes he is his brothers keeper, Rask. goes mental - same goes for Ivan. Smerdyakov etc.

>> No.581064

could a writer afford being something but a moralist fanatic in the 1870s? Censorship sure was pretty hard.

How far could Dostoyevsky have gone without getting banned to Siberia again? Is it even possible to substraction ideological formalities from his books?

>> No.581137

>>581039
>sociopathic

Please, stop using this word incorrectly. To call Raskolnikov and Ivan, both of whom have a strong conscience, sociopaths is ridiculous. The only one of those characters who you could argue is a sociopath is Stavrogin, but I would argue that even he isn't. If you want to know what an actual sociopath is like, you should pay close attention to Pyotr Verkhovensky from "Demons" and Prince Valkovsky from "The Insulted and the Injured".

>> No.581179

Read up on his history. His Christianity definitely wasn't an act.

Jesus Christ, grow up. Must an author's views mirror your own in order for you to appreciate their work? He was a Christian. Get over it.

atheistic absurdist here...

and i know and love Dostoevsky's work. but the guy i quote is right, he was definitely a christian... but a theistic existentialist (using words and labels created long after his death of course) but definitely a Christian. read some Brother's Karamazov and just look at the monk Zosima's shit, especially the long chapter that is just is belief system. shit was cash.

Raskolnikov believes that great men should be allowed to do whatever they want on their quest for power. He starts to think that he himself could be a great man, but after he murders the old lady and the young one (for money) he turns out to be a petty wimp and falls in love with a whore.

It's one of my favorite books, and I recommend it highly. The one downside is Dostoevsky's annoying touch of adding tons of religion and religious salvation to the mix toward the end. Otherwise an especially great read for young angsty brats like I was a couple years ago.

>> No.581257

>using sociopath in the wrong manner

Well, perhaps, but what I meant was how these guys portray themselves as Ubermenschen up to a point then when faced with a commitment (i.e. Raskolnikov's bitch-out after his murders) their supposed supremacy fizzles out.
Not that they ARE sociopaths as such, but that's how they see themselves. Much like most of /b/ or /r9k/.
