I've never read any Pynchon but I kind of want to read Inherent Vice before the movie comes out. Is this advisable? I'll probably go read The Crying of Lot 49 afterwards regardless of whether I like Inherent Vice or not.

Go on and read it.
It's a pretty easy read, especially compared to other books by Pynchon. I guess that's why some of his fans dislike it; it feel watered down compared GR for instance.

It's a good book, though. It's funny and there's a lot going on.
Just don't expect Lot 49 to be more of the same when you move on to that.

Incoherent gibberish, the ravings a blithering buffoon. His prose is also way too prolix.

I'm in the same position as you and loving it. If everything is as better by him, I'm excited as fuck to read the rest of what he's written.

An opinion: Inherent Vice never made me once laugh out in hysterics or jump up and down, fistbumbing fuck yeahs, but the entire time reading I had a smirk and giggled while doing that stupid oh you point towards the page.

Basically this. But it's more than just funny.

What else is it? i'm halfway through and besides a few funny bits, some nice descriptions, and the occasional sad truth about humanity there isn't much there.

I should clarify; this is enough to keep reading and I'm not saying it's a bad book, but I'm not head over heels about it.

If drug culture is a part of your life to the point it is in Doc's it's a perfect representation.

Legitimately commit suicide or stop forcing yourself to read Pynchon.

While a lot of Pynchon fans dislike it because its basically "pynchon-lite" and relatively straightforward in comparison to his more major works, its still a pretty good book.

>> No.5806371

It's very good and readable and funny and there's some very strong, subtle thematic stuff about technology and individuals and property.

It's not mindblowingly dense like some Pynchon but there's still a lot to chew on and think about. If you think it was too simple for you I hope you caught the extra day[/spoiler/].
