The problem is that we're thinking of things as though the populations of 4chan/tumblr/reddit/etc are discrete and separate. It's not that people who use 4chan are more creative than anywhere else, we're just really fucking good at disseminating the fun stuff. The person who came up with lolcats could have posted the first one to their facebook page - no-one would have seen it. But because the second one got posted here, it spread.

That's actually entirely true. THose pictures that say everything on the internet originates on 4chan and then is filtered through reddit and facebook and wherever are complete bullshit, especially since most older 4chan memes came specifically from other websites.
