Also, my favorite African American authors (I've read some literature by African etc. writers but I'm not too knowledgeable) include Zora Neale Hurston (badass woman), Richard Wright (I've tried to start a discussion about him a bunch of times on /lit/ but to no avail, and that's a pity since I think he's still relevant today), Alex Haley, Gloria Naylor, Lorraine Hansberry, Ralph Ellison, William Melvin Kelley and, of course, Toni Morrison... I used to like Alice Walker a lot when I was a teenager; I still appreciate her early novels such as The Third Life of Grange Copeland and Meridian (and The Color Purple to some extent) but a lot of her later writing is New Age bullshit. Oh, did I forget about Ishmael Reed? His books are good, whatever opinion you hold on this guy.

And guess what? I liked the two books by Terry McMillan that I've read. I don't normally read any romance novels but I would if someone ensured me they were all like Terry McMillan's ;) Well-written stuff.
