Fuck your eyes. There's really not much of a negative effect on your eyes as long as you're not reading in the dark with your brightness turned all the way up.

Just adjust your brightness accordingly to the amount of light in your setting and you'll be fine.

I use a Note 2 to read and yes I actually use in pitch black conditions because late at night is the only moment of the day when I can read.
