What are the books that you just can't understand why people read?

My friend first saw the Divergent movie, then decided that since it was so good he wanted to read the book as well. He keeps telling me I should read it.

Anything by James Patterson, the guy who used to work in advertising that co-writes almost all of his books, pushes out more than 10 books a year, and who even Stephen King thinks is a bad writer.

>> No.5736547

I'd say 99% of people who categorize themselves as "readers," read shitty books. The effect this has on their intelligence, is akin to taking a huge pile of shit, and shoveling it into their brains.

One of my friends pressured me into taking out a copy of Divergent from the library (I wasn't going to spend money on that shit either way lol)

I got home, read about thirty pages, hopped back in my car, and returned it that same day. What pandering, generic, marketable garbage; even if I was a kid the age of its target audience I would feel insulted. What little I read read like a movie script, and an overwrought one at that

Well, I kind of agree when it comes to the Old Testament.

If I wanted to read about a bunch of Jews slaughtering the indigenous populations of the desert regions they inhabit and then convincing a higher authority to feel sorry for them, I'd just read an American newspaper

I can entertain an idea that I don't believe in, but there are also useless ideas/books.
There is good parts of the bible but if you only read the good stuff it would be like 30 pages tops.

>>5736720
It's really only worth reading because so many people make reference to it and how deeply ingrained it is in western culture.
Taken on its "own merits" its not a good or interesting book.

Its historically important, so maybe my other post was retarded, it should be more like:

But the Hunger Games and Lord of the Rings are pretty similar as far as literature goes. I mean, they're both blockbuster movie material which has got to point to some similarity

I'm going to disagree and say it's very, very interesting. Psalms by itself would be worth preserving, and the New Testament is fucking brilliant, especially the Gospels. The Koran is more interesting, maybe, but not as well-made.
