i mean if you have the money to waste, you can attempt to get into academia

if you've majored in women studies (and especially if you ARE a woman) you could easily become a freelance, or salaried writer, as these types of articles are extremely popular lately.

white, male philosophy majors are not nearly as valuable a resource.

A waste of whose time?

I'm quite sure many who study philosophy find it rewarding and worth their time.

Does it help produce CONSUMER items and PRODUCTIVE for the big ol' capitalist machine and will reward you with tons of cash? No. But a philosopher probably doesn't give a shit about that (slave morality according to Nietzsche)

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO REPEAT MYSELF

YOU ARE DOING AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE

UNLESS YOU ARE STUDYING SOMETHING SPECIFIC FOR A SPECIFIC JOB (ENGINEERING, MEDICINE ETC) IT DOES NOT. FUCKING. MATTER. WHAT DEGREE YOU DO

ALL THAT MATTERS IS HAVE THAT DEGREE, SHOWING THAT YOU HAVE SPENT 3/4 YEARS AT UNIVERSITY

MOST JOBS IN ARTS FIELD DO NOT TRAIN YOU TO BECOME WHATEVER IT IS,

FOR EXAMPLE, A JOURNALIST: YOUR UNIVERSITY STUDIES WILL NOT TEACH YOU *HOW* TO BE A JOURNALIST, THEY WILL TEACH YOU THEORY AND WRITING SKILLS

YOUR ACTUAL JOB *AS* A JOURNALIST WILL TEACH YOU *HOW* TO BE A JOURNALIST

IF I HAVE TO SAY THIS ONE MORE TIME...

Speaking as a philosophy grad, it is a mixed bag. I worked for almost two year before going on to graduate school and I worked for the U.S. Forest Service for two summers on a trail crew and during the winter I worked as a baker at a ski resort. Totally blue collar jobs, but maybe you can justify it as a sojourn among the proletariat or some crap like that

Im not really sure whether all people have this funny mindset, but thinking that just going to university is going to ease the whole path of "finding a job suitable for you" is completely wrong.
I study philosophy but I have my own business that I started when I was 16 (Im 21 now) and I make four times as much as the average monthly income in my country.
Philosophy set my mindset, and its very hard to keep your mindset same all the time under all of the stress and emotions, this is where philosophy helped me.

How much does it actually cost where you live?
I am about to finish up my bachelor in sociology/philosophy and I am already enrolled in the masters program for sociology, but I also only have to pay about 350 euros per semester.

Part of my decision to do so stems from me not being capable of motivating myself if I am not interested in the field. I spent a good share of my time reading things I am interested in, but I have a hard time reading texts that do not interest me just for the sake of the course, or the test or something along that line. In short, my impression for myself is, I just have to roll with my wants and make the best of that.

I do think it greatly benefited me personally so far and it leaves me with enough time to finance myself through a student-job, aside from that, my impression is that half the jobs in existence are just build around Microsoft-Office skills to begin with... I wouldn't do it if it would leave me with 5-6 digit debt thought.

No *undergraduate* will get anything, hoss. There is nevertheless a career track exclusive to those satisfying the necessary, but not sufficient, qualification "Philosophy degree", that's all.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe one or two years of a BA in Business or whatever *will* get you a job, no graduation required.

Not sure I can help you with the second part. The point is simply that those jobs will indeed go to Phil majors, pending satisfaction of other criteria, hence 'necessary but not sufficient'.

Hi op, i'm a french studient in philosophy, it's my second year. To me if you want to study philosophy just because you like it, then it's useless, do it on your own. University of philosophy is only good to get your degree, most lessons are boring. It's good that you already have a degree in something else because a degree of philosophy alone only allows you to be teacher or to do jobs like that. Having a degree of philosophy in addition of an other degree can be good but it's not a crazy difference either. If you like Nietzsche like i do, i'd recommend you to not do philosophy studies because most teachers don't care about him or what he did for philosophy. Btw Univ in france sucks hard all we do is commentating extracts from Plato, Descartes and Kant. Maybe it's better in Alaska but honestly i'm skeptical about that.

>> No.5725357

Everyone from my undergraduate philosophy department who was smart went into law at various Ivies (myself included). The one kid who was freaking brilliant is at Oxford now for his PhD, so he is on a good track for a philosophy career. He is the only one.

If you don't get into a top PhD philosophy program right out of undergrad, you need to have a backup plan. The only kids who get into top PhD philosophy programs are those kids you you meet and go "wow, that is easily the most intelligent person I have met in my entire life."

If that is not you, study the shit cuz it's awesome, but have your major plan be something else.

I can imagine that the only things you hear about Alaska in France is how cold it is and the Palins.

Believe it or not, we are the best state in America right now. This place is like a northern utopia and we have levels of freedom up here that are exponentially more then people living in San Fran or New York.

If you ever feel like being adventurous, you should come visit. It'll blow your mind.

>>5725357

Yah I think your 100% correct. I really am fascinated by philosophers and their crazy different viewpoints.

I'm definitely not in the same category of that brilliant Oxford kid. People meet me and go "wow, that is easily the most average person I have met in my entire life."

I mean, I double majored, my other's in political science. It's the only field that provides me a legitimate intellectual challenge.

As for your question and interest, most stats show beginning career earnings at 40k, and mid at 80k with unemployment hovering around 6-10%.

I fully feel that I'm at least in the 11th percentile in terms of competitiveness and have few large material desires for my life; so philosophy works for me.

As for actual job stuff, it depends; all a degree in business teaches you is some fundamentals on entrepreneurial work and some good skills for communication. Phil majors show up very well on GRE tests and measures of overall intelligence.

Also, there are the deeper reasons which revolve around a quiet rebellion against the materialization of education, especially on the college/post-secondary level where we are discouraged completely from following our nautral curiosity unless its a STEM field (not to rag on the STEM kids, god has smiled on anyone with a love and incredible capacity for those)

TL;DR

Some job, not a lot of job. The major is interesting. You can expect to 'get' whatever you'd apply for if you feel you're competitive in the interview and have enough stuff on your resume to get a call in.
