Hey /lit/, what is the Cowboy Bebop of literature?

Harry Potter

>> No.5673522

The Maltese Falcon. A lot of character and setting tropes are very similar. Bebop draws heavily, if somewhat indirectly, from that era and genre of mystery novels.

I meant it in the sense that if you want literature recommendations you're probably gonna get shit that covers the same themes as NGE.
Also it's not shit. It's as entry level as Bebop but neither of them are shit.

>> No.5677691

Well Cowboy bebop is an anime so accessible and fan pleasing while still being authentic that absolutely everyone loves it even people not usually into the medium.
I dunno, Enders Game?

the best equivalent would be some western or scifi with stylish, disillusioned/disenfranchised, romantic characters, i'm thinking something like Firefly the TV show, but in book form, more room for the pop-philosophy of Cowboy Bebop

Serial Experiments Lain or Evangelion, and before you even think about it, don't ask /a/, since they hate recommendation threads. Check their wiki for infographs if you need other shows.

They are patrician, though. Just entry-level patrician.

When I look for anime to watch I check directors and writers of stuff I know is great and usually their other work is good too. Also check character designers if you like a certain visual style.
If you are new to anime just start with the canon like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. And be wary that the majority of what is produced is philistine waste of time, that's why it's important to keep an eye out for the few talented people in anime.

Thoughts on Elfen Lied? I can remember marathoning through it like a crackhead when I was 16.

Also, thoughts on pic related.

Lain & Texhnolyze.

Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba, Mind Game.

Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Jin-Roh.

Derivatives, longer than the above, with less content and not quite as good:
Ergo Proxy, Casshern Sins.

Welcome to the NHK, Jintai, Redline.

Animatrix, Darker Than Black, Kemonozume.

This guy has it.

Japanese names are tricky, personally. So I just find works I enjoy, and just connect them together, typically by Director.

I've never liked Mind Game, and on that list I'd replace it with Cat Soup. Kaiba was awesome, but when they decided to add plot it got pretty lame in my opinion. I do like and agree with the list though.

To the guy you responded to (I'm on my phone, sorry): there are loads of manga that are just as good if not better than "patrician level" anime and I'd recommend looking into that.

There may be some science fiction mysteries.

While not set in space except for in a few scenes and some flashbacks, I recommend Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan. Has a very noir mystery meets sci-fi anime feel.
