I'm reading Dune right now. I'm about 300 pages in and I'm finding it hard to want to keep reading. The setting is pretty interesting, but all of the characters are boring as fuck and the story isn't all that interesting. I'm trying to make myself finish it since I've gotten this far, but I'm putting it off since I still have about 150 pages.

If you're skeptical of my reccomendation, read book 4. It's alright but way off from the older books.
And then 5 and 6 are just completely different and much worse.

Everything past that is complete garbage written by his son.

But yea, Dune is pretty great, and Messiah and Children are good followups, but much more plot related and less political allegory charged (which is good or bad depending on your view)

Well there's still politics, but they read more like sequels to the first book than how Dune read, where you could tell it was supposed to bring something into your mind about real world politics. It's fun, watching where the characters go and how they deal with the changing times, but it just feels a little more like that's the main focus with no big idea.
I hope I'm making ANY amount of sense. I could also be completely off base, maybe I just didn't get the allegory like I did in the first book.

I still like them about as much as I hate Heretics and Chapterhouse.

It's a pity that so many people start reading PKD with Androids. All of his pre-1970s SF is - at best - great ideas with weak prose, but Androids has an even more first-draft style to it than many of his other 1960s books.

The guy could really write when he tried, though, so his non-SF 'mainstream' fiction and his 1970s stuff is where he's at his best.

The book is a million times better, Jesus Christ. I don't even compare the two because then I would completely hate the film - it's such a fucking bad rendition.

The series should have ended at the second book. The first builds Paul up as an inhuman messiah and then the second shows his fallibility. It felt wrapped up and finished.

I couldn't finish even God Emperor. I can only take so much of Herbert preaching his authoritarianism and mystic bullshit through Leto's internal monologue.
