Hey /lit/, thinking about going to NYC and becoming an artist.

One question though: how to get an apartment if I have no stated source of income? Are there shitty apartments where the landlord just takes the money and doesn't care?

Try to find a roommate.

Also this is more of a /trv/ thing. You aren't talking about books. If you want to know what publishers to work for or something, that would be relevant.

why do you have to move to be an artist though?

I want to be surrounded by other artists. Art is very much about connections and unless I move out of the bumfuck town I'm from I'm not going to meet anyone who can help me solidify art as my occupation.

Yes and no.

Live in Upper Manhattan. It is cheap, pretty and you do not have to take a shower as soon as you get home like you would if you lived in Brooklyn.

What kind of art?

Please do tell me you becoming a real artist, one who is skilled and trained in the profession. Please do not be worthless, I beg you.

And whatever you do, please avoid the avant-garde. There is no single worse thing in this world than someone attempting to be avant-garde in the 21st century, nothing more absolutely expected and unwanted.

If there's no avant-garde, there's no progress. Avant-garde is simply a preview of what's to come.

Art has only been perceived as something that must progress in the beginnings of modernism. Art, that is art as in Ars/Artis (a skill or craft) is not technology, but a honest profession. One cannot honestly say one, after breaking every rule and standard of excellence, is still never the less practicing the same thing. Someone who makes tables does not say: "I am my own person, I shall revolutionize tables by making them bookmarks! Look how revolutionary I am! How Avant-Garde! No, before modernism art was a profession which had standards and in which one must work to create something new.

Creative only thrives within a system; there is no creativity in freedom. A body whose genes have structure would collapse like art has done.

Also the Avant-Garde is really quite dated now. There is a magnificent realist movement happening right now. Go see the Art Renewal Center.

Not bad for Upper Manhattan. Some cool ex-columbia people and others just doing there own thing up here.

Also a lot of Dominicans.

Try living in Queens: Long Island City or Ridgewood.

Well, that seems wierd to me, what do you like then? to lay down and die slowly? to talk to people or walk long walks thinking, hm . I'm not saying that "working" is the right solution if you see the universe in its eternity, but it does function as a way of being.
Do you consider your angst, as a phobia against life or against death? and why?
why is working a word you can't align with?

I hate routine, essentially, though if my routine involved waking up, reading, taking a walk, and eating a nice meal, I guess I wouldn't mind it. I really just want a simple, leisurely existence.

There's nothing pornographic there, false reporting is supposed to be a bannable ofense, though.
