why doesnt /lit/ like the silmarillion?

It really fills out the LoTR series and gives so much background on the rich world that Tolkien created.

Because the world is not the most interesting part of LotR, the story and the way it's told is. And Silmarillion essentially takes one element of that story from among many and is nothing but that, magnified 10x. So it's much less interesting.

>> No.5540712

This, the most interesting thing about LoTR is the way it is told, not the lore, which is probably one of the most prosaic points of the book.

>> No.5540915

>>5540650
No, the Silmarillion is great. That is, parts of it are great; the problem with it is that it's a lightly-edited set of posthumous notes. Some of the notes are brilliantly dramatic and epic (in the Greek sense of the word), some are simply factual notes of the kind a writer might make while outlining.

I honestly believe that if people were able to read Tolkien's works with fresh eyes, untainted by the mountains of derivative cookie-cutter fantasy dreck, general nerd culture, and the commentary of spittle-mouthed genre-obsessed plotwhores, they would appreciate it as an amazing literary achievement. Unfortunately, it's impossible. Also, I freely admit that there are some really abysmal parts of LOTR, but let's be honest, there are abysmal parts of nearly every literary work, especially those that that are massive undertakings in an essentially unprecedented direction.

With respect to The Silmarillion specifically, this:

Not the person you replied to, but I will offer my perspective.

There's a decent amount of the first half of the first book that just went on too long. Particularly the parts with the barrow-wights and Tom Bombadil (controversial topic I know, but I didn't like him) that were rather boring and didn't add much. I felt I couyld only really get into the story after Strider turned up.

The second book was my favourite by a mile.

The 3rd book probably has the most abysmal parts. The whole part with Sam and Frodo and Gollum just went on TOO LONG and nothing happened. Like, nothing. Travelling, travelling, still travelling, stupid hobbitses, etc. etc. The wrap up at the end of the 3rd book was also a bit drawn out, though not too bad and personally I enjoyed the scouring of the shire as an element, and think it should have been included in the films

I see. Been a while since I read the books and I was pretty young so not really trusting what I remember as boring parts (read Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas running, running and fucking running through forests). Didn't really mind Sam, Frodo and Gollum that much IIRC, do remember thinking it started out slow as fuck

Reading The Silmarillion now, wonder what I'll think of LotR when I get back to it.

It really just is. Tolkien is one if the best authors to ever be.

Saying that I have a question. What is the exact except from Fellowship of the Ring when the chant of the barrow wights is described ?? I can't remember and my butch dog rippped up my copy. All I remember is that it was described as a "cold desolate screaming, miserable and and sad"
