I have this friend who insists on going into any and every book store we walk past, when we're out. Visiting one with them generally consists of aimlessly walking around the isles, possibly picking up the odd book and having a flick through, but for the most part its just him pointing to random books that he thinks have interesting covers and then asking me what they're about, as if I've ever read them. He picks out shit too. It's fucking infuriating. I always make sure to steer clear of bookstores when I'm around this person now.

Why do fedoras always take the "I'm such a reasonable agnostic" stance? You gain nothing by admitting that you cannot prove his non-existence. It doesn't make you look smarter or anything. Imagine the same "agnostic vs atheism" scenario with respect to ghosts, Santa Clause or aliens. When someone says "Santa Clause doesn't real", do you really think it'll make you appear more intellectual to say "You cannot know for certain, maybe he is real"?

it shifts responsibility to explain things up to a higher sphere. that may be unsatisfactory to you, but belief in God does effectively absolve us from needing to understand our own existence, because an entity greater than us understands it

in other words, if I believe in God but you don't, neither of us understand why the universe was created, but I no longer think it's my problem to figure that out

>>5544162
No it's not because you're not explaining anything.

We're cuddling up together and reading a scary story at night and there's a spooky bump sound. You ask me what the bump sound is and I say it's a ghost. That's not an explanation because it explains nothing. It's simply filling in a knowledge gap with something that can never be falsified, and religious people use this property (unfalsifiable) to cling vehemently to their childish, narcissistic beliefs.

>> No.5544204

>>5544184

that's not a good example because ghosts don't have to unfalsifiable, nor does God really

the reason why God is usually not an explanation for the universe is because God is partially defined as "that which is capable of creating the universe", so when you ask what is capable of creating the universe? and your answer is "that which is capable of creating the universe", you've said nothing.

>> No.5544212

Regardless of whether you like it or not its still an explanation. There are no gaps in knowledge, the entire explanation is in the book of genesis.
