The holy books of the religion you're studying.
You can't some up entire intellectual traditions that have in come cases been evolving for thousands of years in a single book.

I suggest starting with a history textbook.

You're not gonna be able to make heads or tails of the actual religious texts if you don't know anything about the peoples who wrote them.
