Balzac is perhaps not the French author that would suffer most from translation.
A handful favorites of mine:

Le Père Goriot
Eugénie Grandet
Beatrix
Savarus (I think)
The Elixir of long life (short story)
Forgot most the titles I read, but just pick anything after those five (for instance Splendeur et Misère des Courtisanes) and you should be set.
