nah that's what ppl in the 18th century thought of religion, that the masses need it to continue to be subdued so they couldn't ruin the hierarchy and wealth

now that the smartes ppl care less about ownership and want to destroy systems of oppression the idea that religion brings order into life just seems antiquated

OH so since there can be idiots we need to demolish all the schools, burn or hide all the books from the masses and reinstate monarchial church-state rule to get them all in order.

Great plan, OP.

Say, communism, capitalism or the 4nonymous cult can all be seen as a sort of religion, it is more of a figure of speech, a piece of poetic license and not a proper religion.
It is also possible some fools would take on a sort of religious fervor for science, but that is NOT what is IS in FACT of practice. Not a proper religion/cult/spook

>> No.5361203

Belief in communism, capitalism, ect., while similar, are all on a different plane of belief than that of religion.

And as to reply to the original post, don't be ignorant or facetious in the way you refer to religion. Personally i am an athiest, but i still believe that the morals and ethica taught by most religions (ex. Thou shall not steal) guides people to live in ways that benifit everyone. So if they do believe in an all powerful god, then let them in peace.

>> No.5361218

Religion is what initially taught "smart people" the morals and ethics to seperate ourselves from animals. These things aren't instinct, and we shouldn't just through aside religious teachings. Most bible stories can be viewed of as allegories for those who do not believe in god, the holy trinity ect, and read just as ine would read those of Socrates.

1. Black isn't a colour
2. Religions aren't colours

I like the analogy above. Religions are like tv channels. I'm not watching tv anymore. That's atheism. I know they're there and broadcasting something, people watch and talking and write about them, but I don't care anymore.

>> No.5361264

I have to disagree with you. At the very primal state, humans dont contain morals at birth. Of course as a child grows up, they are taught what is right and what is wrong through religion, or school, or their parents, and most of the time a combination of the three. But at the very instinctive levels of the human psyche, we are still just animals surviving.

>> No.5361315

>>5361249
But that's not what's commonly assosiated with atheism. It's an ideology. I get the argument that the lack of believe isn't a believe itself, but considering your labeling yourself as such and such is an indicator for a whole microcosm of views and opinions that are commonly associated with that partical label. In theory maybe, but in praxis it's just a replacement for religion with certain characteristics. I hate to use the guy as an example, but just look at Sam Harris and how tries to incorporate certain sets of morals to what he defines as atheistic.

Most people try to help each other, and more often than not they're afraid to do so because they're afraid of what others might think. Populations who had natural tendencies towards tribal altruism had a better chance of survival than others. That said I'd claim that our society makes altruism obsolete because the most ruthless is rewarded as long as they're ruthless within the boundaries of the system, or even protected.

I see what you mean. That atheism is believing that there is no god. And because of the fact that there isn't any way to scientifically prove either claim, it is still essentially a belief.

I get what you mean, but being a replacement for religion doesn't make it a religion. Religion isn't a worldview, or a set of opinions, or a group you associate with.
Personally, I'm atheist and it's not at all a big part of my life or identity. I rarely even think about it unless someone else brings up religion.

That would be too different from most catholics. I doubt those think about religion all the time, nor do they all go to church. I would even go so far and say that the average catholic has watched fewer videos about Jesus but most self proclaimed atheists have seen a lot of Dawkins or whatever. No they shouldn't but I argue they are. In a system that's purely is based on competition, where losing is a more or less existential threat and there's no compensation for being "a good human being", you'll eventually end up with ruthless people on top. When equally skilled agents compete those who are willing to bend the rules are in advantage, especially when the advantages of tribal altruism have been neutralized.
