And my claim is that what it means is just our modern conception of "determinism" (nothing without a cause).

I actually studied the problem of the freedom of the will in Spinoza's Ethics. I eventually realized that many answers were in Schopenhauer.

Hume is credited as being the one who rustled everyone's jimmies by ridiculing the arguments for the concept of "an effect follows from a cause". (he claimed that nothing proved that the Sun would rise tomorrow, we just expect it, it's pure habit).

Kant tried to answer, but he stumbled on a mysterious thing he called "the thing in itself".
Schopenhauer thinks that "will" is the mysterious force behind the phenomenons, that Kant called the thing in itself. ("motivation is causality seen from within").

Traditionally, Spinoza is considered as a new Stoician. Schopenhauer more as a pessimist. But they both draw the consequences from the "belief" in hard determinism. And I guess that they had the same love for pure knowledge.

Mine were about the more obvious, really - Spinoza's Conatus is essentially the Will of Schopenhauer, only less pessimistic, as you've pointed out. The Thing in Itself/Will is also essentially Spinoza's God. The more I look into it, the more I find the need to connect it with Sufi metaphysics - it also has parallels with these two philosophies. All three philosophies also point out a way of indifference and/or resignation as 'Salvation'. I find the connections to be interesting.

Did you even read the second volume of the World as Will and Representation? Schopenhauer doesn't condemn suicide but he never recommends it. He advocates aesthetic contemplation, empathy and denial of the will to live as modes of transcending the will. By the latter he means asceticism/quietism, not suicide.

Studying the problem of the freedom of the will, my focus switched from pure philosophy to sociology. In France, Durkheim and Bourdieu (the latter considered as a structuralist) hold the position of hard determinism. The individual as just a phenomenon in the big causal chain of events.

Durkheim is considered as a founder of sociology with his study of suicide figures, and his notion of "social facts" (Durkheim saw a remarkable stability in suicide figures by country/area/gender etc, and concluded that suicide says more about the structures of a society than it says about an individual). Actually he was reacting to someone (?) who wrote about the freedom of the individual (link below).

Bourdieu focused on the figures proving the lack of social mobility of the individual. Also, he was a pro-feminist ("La domination masculine"), which admittedly rustles my jimmies. He claimed that an individual could be oppressed without knowing it.

Other sociologists reacted and tried to prove the margin of freedom of the individual, the "actor" or "agent" (Boudon, Balandier, Crozet...). The constant fight between hard structuralists and the proponents of individual responsibility, we call it "the sociological (switching) pendulum".
