Loved it. It was to fantasy noir what Altered Carbon was to transhumanist sci-fi noir.

ITT: Op reads a great book with a shitty cover

This cover is far superior. Actually, all the old King covers are superior

was alright I guess. Ilium was better. Hyperion is better than both of them combined.

Today I finished Sophocles' Oedipus the King and then read Cortázar's short story La noche boca arriba [the Night Face Up].

Neither of which are entire books, so the last one would be the Tao Te Ching, which I prefer not to count. So I'll say Dany Laferrière's How to Make Love to a Negro Without Getting Tired, final answer.

Great. You really see the Bukowski influence.

I'd have cut approximately the middle 10 chapters, the beginning is the best.

Very much reading. I prefered Eroshima, though, but Laferrière is surely one of the best living writer.

Did you like it? I thought the ending blew chunks. For a guy who has publicly advocated for a return to story- and character-based fiction, I thought he treated his characters unfairly, and contradicted the themes he had been building for the whole book with that ending.

>> No.534411

It's hard to describe how I feel about this book. It was fun yet boring at the same time. I liked mostly everything up until what happened after Martin Chatwin. Mostly I feel like some characters were built up a little then disregarded a few times in the story but really once the story got to fillory everything was eh. I hope everything that happens winds up meaning something in the sequel he plans on writing because I wanted Quentin to do so much more.

Blood Meridian. Thought it was a masterpiece. To get your moneys worth from the book, after reading it look up Blood Meridian in Youtube and look at this 90 minute lecture from Yale on it.

Not >>534741, but I love the fuck out of the Forever War for way too many reasons. It reads like it was written recently, the war is brutal, and above all it really gets across the absolute perverse bullshit of the setting's military.

For some reason it kind of reminds me of Gateway, too, so if you like that it might help.

I've heard the sequel's terrible though.
