Spanish is a nice language, sure, but its poetry is shit compared to the English poetry. Since English is mostly monosyllabic they can stuff their verses with much more content and material, since it takes more words to fill the metric. This makes a great difference.

In Spain there was also the problem of the primitive mindset and all that catholic religious fanaticism. Spain was very crude and harsh compared to Britain, not only in its society, but also its culture. Shakespeare and Cervantes were contemporaries, but the language of the Spanish writer (and let us put Lope de Vega here too) seems a rough and grotesque peasant dialect compared to the modern and cosmopolitan language of Shakespeare.

And (before you say something) no, I am not British or American: my native language is Portuguese.

Also: if we are competing for who owns the most beautiful language, I guess the Italians win this round.

you had the right idea, and a sense of urgency to match. i enjoyed watching you walk down those long hallways with the large windows. i liked watching the sun's light caress your face. i looked down at my dirty feet and began to feel queasy. i heard pounding thoughts race through my head. i was sure that i was dying; and then - stillness. time had stopped. i looked away from the floor. you were gone. the voices of others that occupied the busy campus had been put on pause. i felt itchy, so i started scratching at my skin. soon it began to tear off in little chunks, and it became a sensation of pain and simultaneous relief. the walls turned a dark color, and my mouth widened into a smile. my body buzzed and vibrated. i punched myself in the mouth as hard as i possibly could. blood was everywhere. i began pulling out as many teeth as i could, swallowing some - and sticking the rest into the raw muscle where my skin had been just a minute before. i began to shake uncontrollably. the world resumed. they stared at me, and soon their skin began to shed. there we were, a myriad of skinless creatures. their bodies began to rub up against mine. some writhed upon the floor. the sensation was too appealing. a smell of rottenness permeated the air. the sun went down. a man's face was stuck in a permanent smile, and was blood poured from his eyes. i inched closer and whispered "i love you...". he began to gag and collapsed into a seizure. i felt the sudden urge to piss, so i squatted and pissed into his foaming mouth. the walls began to collapse - the rubble swallowed most around me. i stopped breathing, and began to run madly. after a few minutes, a flash of light stopped me in my tracks. i covered my eyes with a toddler i had found searching for its mother. i then threw it on the ground carelessly. a vagrant women concealed in a tattered cloak crept out from an alleyway, and began to eat the infant. she looked exactly like you. i heard screaming, so i ran further. again i was interrupted, this time by a brick wall. angry at myself, i began to flail and beat my head off of it. blood ran down past my chin, and a slight tingle began near my groin. before i knew it, i had come. i gathered the runny mess with my left hand, and smeared it on a dead body that lay nearby. i felt strange. just a few minutes ago, i had been a normal person, with a normal job - an average life. i bit myself as hard as i could, wondering if all of it had been nothing but a savage dream. i was wrong, and screamed out in pain. my eyes watered, my chest swelled. i felt trapped. i WAS trapped. i kissed my armpit and lied down, slowly creeping into the fetal position. i sucked my thumb and awaited death's grace.

Gol. Golazo.

I see your Quasimodo.

Decuplica effetti a lui cari fornendo tettoie e ripari a coscienze,
I servi cantavano strofe sagaci, storie salaci conobbero i Traci,
di pastori non ne urgo, la saliva del demiurgo lavo e purgo nel cinismo convinto;
anacoretoretoricotopica lacera critica d’anomalia,
barbelognostica via, Giocasta e la sua fantasia,
emancipa l’etica l’ottica ludica pelvica l’attica pratica impura
cannibalismo e sozzura, no sepoltura!

Denkend aan Holland
zie ik breede rivieren
traag door oneindig
laagland gaan,

rijen ondenkbaar
ijle populieren
als hooge pluimen
aan den einder staan;

en in de geweldige
ruimte verzonken
de boerderijen
verspreid door het land,

boomgroepen, dorpen,
geknotte torens,
kerken en olmen
in een grootsch verband.

de lucht hangt er laag
en de zon wordt er langzaam
in grijze veelkleurige
dampen gesmoord,

en in alle gewesten

Maintenant on dit "bon weekend!".

Though I'm not Christian, I use some words without thinking twice.
btw, France is famous during the Revolution for trying to change the christian/gregorian calendar. Instead of Janvier or Février, they named months "pluviose" (rainy), ventose (?) (windy)

The problem is we use Arabic words that are really basic. I can understand using, for example, tasavvuf, nefs, cism and such words, or words that are necessary for Islam, but 've'? something so simple as and?
Another thing is that the Republic and the late Ottoman intellectuals (some of them at least) started a war against foreign words, that's why we Türks notice and be irritated by foreign words so much. It became a political thing almost, in some cases you a word you pick can imply you are
religious/'modern'/'western'/nationalists/Kemalist.

believe it or not, we learnt (a bit) about Atatürk and the Young Turks in school.
A friend of mine is learning Turk (the language).
She doesn't really know why, but her mother is of "unknown origin".
I've been to Istanbul and Izmir, but don't speak a word. I didn't know about the connections with the Arab language.
I visited the St Sophia Mosque, I loved it when they made my sister cover her legs and arms. They know how to put women in their place.

what? Hagisophia isn't supposed to be a mosque, it is a museum, and there is no forced covering for entering anywhere here, at least legally.
When did you come?
>young Türks
I assume you are the French guy. France was the second country of Young Türks so it is understandable.
The language is called Turkish by the way, Türk is the person.

1935, faget!
Well, WP says that's when it was turned into a Museum.
Have you ever been there?
I visited it in the 90's. I thought I remembered Muslims praying on the floor... I've seen real Mosques, maybe I'm confusing.
The most famous Istanbul museum was Topkapi.
I distinctly remember having to take off my shoes, and my sister getting mad about the "discrimination". Can't swear it was Saint Sophia.
It looks quite like a Mosque, anyway (minarets...).

>Turkish

>care to explain a little?
nothing to explain, really.
Her mother is a schooteacher and was adopted as a child, from an unknown Mother.
My friend may look Turkish, anyway for some reason she loves the language. She takes real evening classes.
She likes different cultures, also Klezmer music.

It wasn't Hagisophia. It was probably Sultanahmet or Sulaymaniye. I was born in Sulaymaniya, heh.

It isn't, it would sound weird (or too literally translated). "Bon dimanche" is still the closest native expression.

You can also use the tongue-in-cheek 1920s spelling and write it "ouiquende".

yeah, as tourists you tend to be especially compliant, "plus royaliste que le roi" ("more royalist than the king")
I've never been to Kurdistan. I don't doubt I visited St Sophia, the "blue Mosque", now known as Hagisophia.
Checked the en.WP article.
They say worship in Hagisophia "was strictly prohibited", at least until 2006. Unfortunately, the reference used dates from 2011, and the Turkish gov apparently changed the webpage since then. Not a single mention on a ban on worship now.
WP also says that the new govt wants to make Hagisophia a worship place again.
I don't remember the name of the political Party in power, but it often made the news here (the fear of Islamism and the injustice against women).

Yeah, they want to make Hagisophia a mosque again.

calm down, bro, we had a nice conversation going.
I took the time to look up the two names you mentioned. I could be on YN currently!
For the second name, en.WP said it's a place in Kurdistan/Irak.
The 1st name, according to en.WP, refers to an antique racecourse (I posted the pic from the article, apparently a french pic called "hippodrome" (horse/field, racecourse))
You certainly know these places better than me or en.WP. I thought it meant you were from Kurdistan. Sorry bro.
So you were born in Istanbul?
I remember the city was incredibly hot in summer, like 40°C.
In our french guide probably called "Le Routard", they refered to Hagisophia with 3 names, and it's constantly mentioned that the 3 names come from the 3 traditions. So we were well aware that the place was at the center of many debates. It was certainly the place I visited that looked most as a Mosque, even though among all Mosques, it's probably the one looking least like one.
But I did go there, no doubt.
I you say it wasn't blue in the 90's, I trust you. "Blue Mosque" was just refered to as one of the names.

Anyway, bringing /int/ to /lit/ is interesting, quite different.

>calm down, bro, we had a nice conversation going.
Uh, wasn't really agressive, but anyway.
Süleymaniye could be a common name for many places. This one, the Mosque or the Külliye is made after Suleiman the Magnificent, which is where I was born, the hospital in its Külliye -Külliye is, how may I say, was the time's 'life center'. It included library, hospital, market etc, with the mosque being its center-.
Sultanahmet Mosque is near to antique hippodrome you meintioned, that is probably why it came up together.
Yeah, Istanbul gets really hot in summer, which is why I leave it at the first chance.
Hagisophia was always the same color, when it was a church, when it was a mosque, and now. Maybe tone changes during restorations, but it was the same. It isn't refered as Blue mosque though.
Also, Sultanahmet Mosque is called Blue Mosque because of the color of its glasses, not its whole. Sultanahmet is the biggest one.

ok, I get it know.
granted, I must have mistaken the Blue Mosque and Hagisophia (itself refered to with 3 names in our guide).
I did go to both, but mixed the 2 in my memory.
That's a complex/rich history.
I read that Greece in the last "Western" country who adopted the Gregorian calendar, in the 1920's.
I also read that Istanbul, when considered european, is now the biggest city in Europe.

>I also read that Istanbul, when considered european, is now the biggest city in Europe.
Didn't know that. I thought London or Paris would be bigger.
I heard that it had the most skyscrapers in Europe after Moskow though, but that's hardly a good thing. Some parts of Istanbul is completely developed, but there are parts that look like Romanian gypsy streets.

You should also consider that only 2/3 of Istanbul's population is in Europe.
