High literature is literature written about nuanced, heroic, usually noble, characters in an ornate style, usually poetry, dealing with problems of great importance.
Macbeth, for instance, is a noble, and a war-hero, who struggles extensively with regal ambitions and fate, with various proddings from his wife, and ultimately succumbs to it, becoming a guilt-troubled villan. Macbeth is written in blank verse, with extended and intricate use of metaphor, simile, and other rhetorical and literary devices.

Low literature is about un-heroic people, usually the middle or lower class, dealing with small problems, and its aims are usually to amuse, or to titillate. For example, Aninas Nin's Delta of Venus is a series of pornographic stories about one or two dimensional thespians, womanizers, models, commoners, etc, who engage in sundry, exotic sexual acts. Her stories are written a mostly reportorial manner.
