OP, can you help me please?

I didn't want to start a thread for this since the sticky tells us not to do this sort of thing, but I'm so unknowledgeable about literature in general, that I must ask someone.

I'm trying to get into books which discuss reality and shit like that. Cavern allegory and stuff.

Is that book a good book to get into it, and what more can you guys recommend?

I thank you all in advance!

> hey are made of poor quality materials

well that's the whole purpose of penguin books - to publish a huge catalogue of cheap books, of course the quality is not excellent

> they pick terrible art for the covers

that's debatable. I appreciate most of their covers.

> the black makes them look like shit on a bookshelf

also debatable.

> personally like hardcovers with purty bindings

everyone prefers hardcovers, the thing is, they are fucking expensive.

> if you don't have two shekels to rub together or are just interest the text then don't see whats wrong with penguin

voila. There's not wrong with Penguin if you understand that their purpose is to publish good literature with low costs. You dont buy penguin as a collector, you buy penguin because you're a fucking broken student and likes to read.

Yes. It's written in a style that you're meant to follow it volume by volume, like it's the guy's memoirs. In fact, they're written in that exact style. The author wrote it so well that, when it was published, people were wondering just who the hell this Flashman guy was.

Flashman is fictional, though. He's from a book from the 1850s called Tom Brown's Schooldays, where he was a bully.

But, yeah, it is totally worth it. It's one of those series where you're not supposed to sympathize or like Flashman, because he's a craven, dishonorable, lying, cheating bastard, but you just end up liking him.

Your critique was pitiful, as I expected.
Saying 'just what the generic teenager feels which is why it is so popular' is like saying '*insert Romanticist poet here*'s love poems suck because everyone can identify with what they're talking about, which is why it is so popular.'

Having relate ability to a character does not discredit a work.
>The book is about nothing except a self absorbed, arrogant, teenager who thinks he has it all figured out.
He has nothing figured out, that is one of the main concepts of the story. He constructs what he believes to be flawless and realistic opinions of society, which in reality are the result of inexperience, alienation and misunderstanding.

To think the book is popular because 'it identifies with the generic teenager' is completely missing the point. The book is a critique of 'the typical teenage angst'. It attacks Holden's views as nonsensical and destructive, hence what happens to him in the end.

To think this book was written for teenagers to identify with and use it as a 'bible' proves you have not given enough thought.

Not necessarily emo but Caulfield certainly is a emotionally unstable whiny jackass. Not even speaking of his homosexual tendencies.

And if you call every single person a "phony", while awarding honesty only to yourself (except when you've got an episode of self-pitying) and then adapt that to every possible situation (certain names are phony, certain subjects are phony etc. etc.) then in a broader sense you certainly are a fucking hipster, yeah.

All in all Holden is a self-important insufferable little bitch and the kind of person that would cause internet drama on social media nowadays.

Right...

Seriously though, fundamentally it is what you get. Of course there is the underlying motive of depicting such a character in a profound way but having that exact character as the narrative voice shifts the whole thing.

The experience while reading it is certainly not "Oh that line there is a satire of this aspect of youth and that resembles this aspect of inexperience" etc etc but more "Holy fuck I fucking hate you you little shit Jesus Christ what are you doing?"

I'd go so far and call it immersion.

Fucking hell man, think of a pic on 1984. Nobody would put an image on how to keep the status quo in an authoritarian state into the third panel, even though it essentially is what 1984 is about. So calm your tits.

Next time, use one picture in in square.

These are meant to fast, quick jokes, not collages on how you felt sadness, statue of socrates, random words and/or stock photos..

essentially this. if you dislike something because of some weird perceived reputation, you're still a bandwagoning faggot, you're just jumping on a different bandwagon.

Yes.
I mean, you still have the kinky stuff, but the books goes like:

-The cutie girl finds a son of a bitch.
-The guy wants to fuck her in the ass, whip her while he masturbates, etc. and further till the end of the book
-So, in order to justify all of this, he spends 4 pages saying that there is no god so he can do whatever he wants if it pleases him.
-Repeat again and again...
