Well, personally, I think the likes of Thomas Ligotti or Robert Aickman are miles better.

I don't know about best, but Poe is certainly better than Lovecraft. Because, well, he can actually write.

I hate to say this but I have to go with lovecraft, But I do love Poe work.

Don't like Aickman? Shame, some of the stories in The Wine Dark Sea really unsettled me.

But Ligotti's definitely worth reading. Pity his older stuff (The Nightmare Factory) is so expensive to get a hold of these days.

Poe and Lovecraft have such different styles that comparing them and trying to decide which one is better is a bit pointless.

Poe was more about psychological horror, madness and insanity, and the depravity of humankind and unnatural events.

Lovecraft was more about cosmic horror, the fear and terror of the great unknown, and how humanity in the great scheme of things is insignificant.

There both excellent horror writers and I think it's more a matter of personal preference to say one is greater than the other.

i'd have to say lovecraft call of cthulu was pretty great also his short stories made me jizz fear into the night
