The Magicians by Whathisname is kind of cool. Magic is based on flaws/bugs/hacks in the underlying structure of the universe, which is implied to be superficially similar to a computer or something. Quentin's a little cunt, though, and the whole thing goes full fucking crazy at the end of the second book.

Not at all. It's a mythical epos that builds up to the fundamental confrontation of good vs. evil. It has a god-tier ''magic'' system, great characterization of the people that appear in it etc.

Naruto is really all about mythos. Every character has his own complex mythos. It's so damn underrated because of shitty filler and the shonen-background of the story

The problem with power creep is that the scale of the story usually quickly exceeds the ability of the storyteller to humanize things on that scale. It's what crippled Naruto and what cripples most fantasy, shonen, etc, besides the broad comedy they stuff into every moment of downtime to keep it energetic, which fucks the character realism. We're still very invested in the main characters because we've gone through their stories with them, but their stories, but nearly everything else is awful for anything but thrills. It just retreats into shoddy, Japanese flavored mysticism, or it lacks the relation to everyday life to be communicable in summary. (THE LEGENADARU DUDE X) The only anime I've seen that handles problems on that scale well is Eva, which does it by making what's happening symbolic or uncomfortably anomalous, Kafka style.

Naruto, Bleach and One Piece have all been translated today, but Hunter x Hunter is taking a while because it has a lot more dialogue and more complicated plot.
