Dante was a Christian at a time when Christians actually believed in sin and doctrine. People didn't go to heaven just because "muh feels." If you go against God you go to hell, period.

I bet you're thinking of Brunetto Latino. He was put in Hell for despising his native language (he was italian but would only write in Latin and Southern France languages). Dante considered native languages to be a gift and God and, although less noble than Latin and Greek, still worthy of respect like a mother.

Note that Dante putting someone in Hell is much more about making a point than exacting revenge (though there's obviously some of that too).

Dante didn't dislike Latino, who was his friend and mentor, he uses him as a point man. People at the time though that only ancient languages were deserving of "high" topics like religion, philosophy or cosmogony. Dante was willing to chnge that and that's why he wrote the Comedy. The idea of making Italian a "high" literary language is a project that permeates all of Dante's works (De Vulgarii Eloquentia, On Eloquence in Common Tongue, is older than the Comedy and entirely dedicated to that topic). So putting Latino in Hell only makes sense in this respect. But it's much more a literary (and political, as respecting your language was a gateway into respecting your country and stop civl wars) project than "hurr I'll send him in Hell that'll show him". Dante, a devout Catholic, knew well he hadn't authority to put people in Hell.
