>white person attempts to write dialogue for a black character
>clearly doesn't know anything about AAVE, just throws in a lot of cuss words and unconjugated "be" (usually used incorrectly)

Just now I realized that I never read a book with a black character (not counting really minor roles) besides Moby Dick.

I don't know, I've read Absalom! Absalom!, the Sound and the Fury, and As I lay dying.

I heard Light in August is pretty entry level. Of the three I read, I would say begin with As I Lay Dying and then Sound and the Fury, and then Absalom! Absalom!.

Absalom! Absalom! is a prequel to Sound and Fury so make sure Sound and Fury is read first.

So is Goethe. Have you read Goethe?

>> No.5265335

I felt a similar disdain when reading Catcher in the Rye. It felt like the author overheard some teenagers at a bus stop and deemed himself to be down with the hip crowd.

I have. Werther was unbearable dry shit, Faust was good. Some of his shorter works are merely okay.

If Goethe is the only big-ticket name you can trot out for a dick-measuring contest, you're gonna lose around these parts.

It was not supposed to be a dick-measuring contest, it's just that most american readers probably haven't read him, just like I haven't read Twain.
Not everyone has read everything, that's all I tried to get across there.

>>5265403
That's nice and all, but what does this have to do with anything?

I can generally agree with you, Goethe's big achievements are less in his literature, and rather what he did for literature. You should read Faust nevertheless.

It was a book by a female(white) author and the Main female lead had a black male friend... that was sad. To give her points they all were from the South but fuck man...

I've found that there's 2 approaches to writing a black character that doesn't come off as racist. There's "The Huey" and "The Lamar"

Huey is one of the main characters on The Boondocks. He's smart, insightful, and yet still maintains his black dignity instead of just acting like a white man in a black guy's skin (like Mr. Dubois, or an Uncle Tom, if you prefer)

Lamar is a support character in GTA 5. Rude, crude, but still likable because, just like Huey, he isn't afraid to be anybody but himself.

>> No.5265625

>>5265617
If you want an example of a Huey read Jean Toomer's Cane. However, that was written by a black man.
If you're white, maybe you should just give up.
