>Then there was notch-cube grinding, improving the impact tolerances of Plates and Strips, sculpting a trollface on a fresh mountain range.

I thought I was reading Hannu Rajaniemi, not Tao Lin.

It's WoW guilds... IN SPACE.

I wish I remembered who recommended Rajaniemi to me, so I could just ignore all their future recommendations.

I just looked up that book on Goodreads and saw its a trilogy. Someone suggested book one of that series on here a few months ago.... The plot sounds like the movie "In Time" with Justin Timberlake... did they take the plot to make the movie or the other way around?

Well, The Quantum Thief was published a year earlier.

>In 2169, people are born genetically engineered with a digital clock on their forearm. When they turn 25 years old, they stop aging and their clock begins counting down from one year; when it reaches zero that person "times out" and dies instantly. Time has become the universal currency; it is used to pay for day-to-day expenses and can be transferred between people or capsules.

This has superficial similarities to Mars in The Quantum Thief, but isn't that similar in practice. In TQT, time is a very minor thing since people are revived eventually after they die, and most of the book is about the gevulot interactions, not the time currency.
