It isn't about the story. The story is intentionally nonsensical. It's about the fact that it is a complete deconstruction of Metal Gear and video games. It's a postmodern critique of fantasy escapism and geek culture.

The bad bosses are bad because they needed to be. The game was designed to have your expectations frustrated. That was the goal. It did this repeatedly through story (you don't play as Solid Snake for example) and formally (consider the strategic differences in playing the visually similar Raven and Fat Man battles).

Basically, this game was lost on you. You might have been wowed by the "mindfuck" of an ending, but that was the worst part. That was Kojima spelling everything out in the end because he was afraid his audience wouldn't pick up what he was more subtly trying to do throughout the entire game. With your comment, you're proving him right. Which is sad. Because it's people like you that made him "change with the times" for MGS3 and make it an action based James Bond spoof. Yes, The End is one of the best boss battles in video game history, but that doesn't even come close to the artistry in the design of MGS2.

This list greatly resembles one I'd assemble myself. Haven't read the Kafka or Pynchon, so I wouldn't be able to include those (I'd add The Sound and the Fury and The Sun Also Rises instead)

>Movies
Haven't seen Aguirre or Paris Texas, but I totally approve of the other three choices. Paths of Glory is a nice underrated Kubrick flick. It makes sense that someone who likes L'Age D'Or would also enjoy Inland Empire.

>Music
Here it all falls apart. Try listening to something that isn't "indie" rock for once in your life. Not even TMR can redeem this terrible list. Listen to some Stravinksy or Miles Davis for the love of god. If you can't appreciate them, you have no business liking Captain Beefheart and you ought to stop pretending.

True
>The bad bosses are bad because they needed to be. The game was designed to have your expectations frustrated
The game is phenomenal, but don't bullshit me and tell me the bosses were intentionally bad
That's just lazy Kojima cock sucking.

>consider the strategic differences in playing the visually similar Raven and Fat Man battles
They aren't similar. One involves using a plot device to artificially lengthen the game (hurrdurr rejects expectations)
>You might have been wowed by the "mindfuck" of an ending, but that was the worst part. That was Kojima spelling everything out in the end because he was afraid his audience wouldn't pick up what he was more subtly trying to do throughout the entire game
I didn't mention that or suggest that at all you fuckwit. Stop smelling your own farts in smug superiority, you weren't the only one to understand it.
> Because it's people like you that made him "change with the times" for MGS3 and make it an action based James Bond spoof
Firstly, fuck off you pretentious pooptickler. Where did I state I didn't enjoy the game, and the whole "spoof" idea is bullshit. Comical Japanese Easter eggs doesn't equate a spoof. I could just as argue that MGS3 is a deconstruction on the whole male fantasy that is James Bond and setting the stage for political backdrop.

It's still a good game. The actual gameplay of sneaking around is a lot of fun. I used to play the tanker section over and over when I was too young to appreciate the full depth of what was going on in it. Tons of fun things to do to keep you playing it over and over (sort of ironic considering the message of the game is to turn it off and be aware of how technology is effecting yourself and the world around you), even if you're just seeing what sorts of things you can destroy with your pistol, or trying to collect dog tags, or trying for a perfect stealth run.

It doesn't so much resent you, as much as it's trying to teach you something. I can see how many video game geeks could conflate the too though.

I'm a big fan of media that critiques its own audience. That's what I liked about Paranoia Agent. Kon is doing the same thing here, but through the medium of animated film rather than a game. It's a bold move, if you ask me.

>It's pretty understandable, if not complex
Bisexual Vampires? The President is a terrorist with robot arms? A fat mad bomber in roller skates? What part of this bullshit makes sense to you?

>The game is phenomenal, but don't bullshit me and tell me the bosses were intentionally bad
Why wouldn't they be? Every other Metal Gear game has phenomenal bosses. Why do you think they'd drop the ball so poorly just for one game?

>They aren't similar. One involves using a plot device to artificially lengthen the game (hurrdurr rejects expectations)
Wrong. They don't play out similarly, but visually they're extremely similar (pic related). If you played the first game (as you're expected to have), you might try a similar strategy (lay low and use mines), but it won't work (fatman's bombs will blow up and you lose).

>I could just as argue that MGS3 is a deconstruction on the whole male fantasy that is James Bond and setting the stage for political backdrop.
I suppose that's what I meant. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "spoof".

Also, perhaps you ought to take a xanax or something. You're clearly getting a little red in the face with your comments.

It's a life-changing experience. I always play in runs (may take 10-20 hours), and it's way better than any drug I've ever done.

When I first entered the Zone on my first playthrough of Shadow of Chernobyl, I thought it was going to be shitty. Mediocre graphics, relatively common glitches, impossibly difficult, but somehow you just wake up a few days later realizing that you will never experience life the way you had before.

Don't know what to recommend for books to be honest. You seem more drawn to philosophy than fiction, and having not read anything by Spinoza and Hegel, I don't really know who would be similar in spirit.

For movies I recommend Tokyo Story, 8 1/2, The Rules of the Game, and The Man with the Movie Camera. Also if you like Godard and have already seen Vivre sa Vie and Contempt, check out Pierrot le Fou. It's Godard deconstructing his own films, in a way. Full of intertext and references.

For music I recommend checking out Onra (Chinoiseries parts 1 and 2) and Sun Ra (Angles and Demons at Play, Nubians of Plutonia, Is a Sound of Joy, and many others).

War and Peace (best book I ever read: a miracle of the human creative spirit); Anna Karenina; Tolstoy’s short-stories (especially The Death of Ivan Ilicht, Kholstomer, The Snowstorm, The Devil, The Kreutzer Sonata, The Devil).

The Plays of Shakespeare (he is probably the greatest writer of all time). All of them contains several beauties (for example: Timon of Athens - is not a great play, but the speeches of Timon cursing humanity are among the greatest things ever written by any human being at any time in history). I like Macbeth quite a lot, also Henry IV, and A Midsummer Night Dream and The Tempest. But all the works of Shakespeare are great.

Revisiting this thread in the morning now, I'm OP of that list. The guy you were arguing with wasn't actually me. I also love those two books you would add. Definitely check out Aguirre. Paris, Texas is more on there for production than plot reasons, though. As for music, I listen to everything, but "indie" is just what I listen to most. It combines pop with a hint of artistry. 90% of the concerts I go to are experimental music (which I also make) and I perfom in a jazz band. I also love Tyler, the Creator, Lana Del Ray, and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Spending way too much time in this thread,

it's got nothing to do with fedoras. vikings is a largely mediocre television show. house of cards is decent but i think people give it more credit than it deserves because it looks nice and the actors play their roles very well.

but sherlock is a bad tv show made to appeal to all the thundercunts who watch doctor who.

i've never seen firefly but it looks bad and it's science fiction so it probably is bad.

Please reserve your judgement for things you have actually experienced. I can't say anything about most of the shows listed there (except for Sherlock which I completely agree with you on) but Firefly had clever writing. It was a great show. Like Allie Caulfield it died young, before it was corrupted by living too long.

I dropped Vikings on the second season, and Sherlock is decent, if only because it's brief and therefore forced to not drag shit out uselessly to milk viewers.

Compared to my favorite movies, everything but TD was dull. I haven't found many decent TV series so far.

Any suggestions? I imagine you enjoy other equally mind-numbing trash like 24 and Criminal Minds but because they don't have huge fandoms that "patricians" bash you're alright with them.

Ahahahahahahaha. You're sooooo funny. My music isn't recorded, I painstakingly write out the sheet music for my untuned balalaika symphonies; the tuning itself changes every 10 seconds and I only perform in 7/128 time signature. My silent films together form a bildungsroman and are recorded on film, consisting of moving images of myself, engaged in meaningful discourse, a dialectic between self and non-self without the presence of non-self. The content of my books is too arcane for the average reader, so I won't even get into that one, child.
