I can! Freaking loved this series.

(Don't watch the movie, though, the movie is crap.)

Although initially appearing to be a typical young adult/'kid' (and I use that term lightly holy shit do these books get violent) fantasy series featuring cute 'talking animals' and their adventures with a rather bizarre dedication to biological facts about the various animal species therein, it quickly evolves into a narration of World War II politics set against a backdrop with questions regarding magic and humanity that are never quite fully answered.

...there's also a spin-off series about the dire wolves from the book too but I admit I haven't read that.

Sorry, I don't own the Japanese
Version myself. I was just browsing some of the book covers on google and happen to find them. However, I highly recommend reading this series. Originally Kathryn Lasky was going to make a non-fiction book about owls, but her husband pointed out that its very hard to do research on them due to how rare it is to find them out in the wild. So he recommended writing a fictional book about them. When she created the book series she included many facts about owls while still sticking to the mythical tale.

Guilty as charged, I couldn't help but watch the movie and buy it on DVD! I was looking forward to it when I heard about it as a kid! I'm thankful that Zach Snyder directed the movie, I didn't mind that he combine the first three books together for the film. I hated how they completely changed Digger's personality jus for the sake of comedic relief.

I highly recommend reading Wolves of the Beyond, it's also very good!

>> No.5189198

(I can never find Wolves of the Beyond at my bookstores and I don't get the opportunity to shop online all that often, otherwise I'd have read them. Real shame, wolves aren't even my thing but the dire wolf culture was fascinating to me.)

See, I could understand certain plot changes for the sake of condensation, I get that, it happens in every book-to-movie adaption, but there were some changes that really made no sense, like what happened to Soren's parents and the fact that almost all the WWII subtext was thrown out by basically setting it in Australia/Tasmania.

...like changing Digger's personality is only less of a sin compared to...this thing.

Also, tfw no Hortense or Grimble. ;_;

Sorry to hear that anon, but if you somehow get the chance then definitely give it a try.

I'm guessing they didn't kill off the parents possibly because of the kid audiences. Oh man I completely forgot about Hortense!! But I'm pretty sure Grimble was in the movie

>if you watched the movie he was the owl who helped Soren and Gylfie escape

I really enjoyed the dire wolves in the books, especially when Coryn met them for the first time. And how he ate (I think an elk) along side a bear and wolf.

>>5189207
Yeah I was confused when the Echidna was in the film. Because I really didn't recognize the character.

Yeah I had misgivings about the movie because when Soren got stranded on the ground (also it was Soren and KLUDD, which made even less goddamn sense since Kludd was the one who kicked him out of the nest as part of his initiation into the Pure Ones in the books), that thing that attacked them did /not/ look like a raccoon, which I knew was what they were all freaked out about.

Then when it became clear it was a tasmanian devil and then that mystical deus-ex-machina echidna showed up, well at that point I just started losing hope. Which is probably why I don't remember Grimble, I've blocked a lot of the movie out.

I don't like how they dumbed the material down for kids in the movie. Because all the WWII subtext, which was already mentioned during The Siege in regards to Ezylryb's speech being similar to one given by Winston Churchill during the Blitz, I noticed it more when I was reading...I think it was River of Wind? When they met the blue "dragon owls" (who I think represented isolationist Japan)? Yeah, all the historical subtext was just what I found really cool.

Also, seriously, for a 'kid' series...so violent. So goddamn horrifyingly violent.

Exactly! I mean I guess they had to figure out a way to introduce the audience in the pure ones and how Kludd got involved. But they most certainly could have stuck to the original story.
Also in the books Kludd was the original metal beak because he killed the previous leader of the Pure ones.

>Demonstrated in pic related.

If a sequel ends up being made then I think Kludd will take on the role of the new metal beak I suppose. Oh yes it was ridiculously violent in the books but it didn't stop me from reading them. Actually my parent were quite surprised by the violence themselves. The reason they got me the books was because I became very interested in owls when Great Horned owls started to appear in our neighborhood.

Oh yes, I liked the history references to! I didn't notice them at first when I was a kid but later on it became interesting. I noticed how in one of the books when Dewlap the librarian of the great tree turned out to be a traitor, some books were banned to read. In fact some books were burned.

>Outilissa did not think fondly of this

Speaking of Outilissa, they made her a short eared owl instead of a spotted owl. I kind of found that strange.

An interesting point. Since the battle was obviously 'off-screen' in the books but the movie ended with Kludd supposedly surviving the forest fire and finding Metal Beak's mask (though I can't recall if Metal Beak actually was slain in the movie), does this mean we'll actually see them duel in the sequel for control of the Pure Ones? Perhaps they'll redeem the plot with something akin to a power struggle? Because I will admit...that would be awesome.

From the looks of things I think it's safe to assume that the previous High Tyto in the movie is dead. Because when Soren was nearly killed in the film by the High Tyto at the last second Soren managed to get a hold of his burning branch and burned the High Tyto to death.

Yeah I wasn't really expecting the Strigga to look so shaggy either lol

I really enjoyed this series when I was younger, along with Warriors (forgive me, I never knew about the rabid fanbase), Silverwing and GOAT Redwall.

I guess the idea of animals and very dark themes really interested me.

Did anyone else find Firewing to be incredibly horrifying for a child to read?
>Main protagonist's son is kind of a pansy, who accidentally kills his best friend via immolation
>Both father and Son are dragged to literal Hell
>Inferno-esque descriptions of torture
>Motherfuckin Dante hanging out in Hell

This is a book series aimed specifically at children while this board is 18+ and intended for adults; the series has absolutely zero literary merit, as I know because I read these books when I was in the first fucking grade; and also I don't want the emotionally stunted manchildren who still like and read these books to accidentally leave their containment thread and start browsing /lit/.
